Not a gamer, just a regular dude. (Not to say gamers aren't regular dudes). I first purchased a PC in the mid 90's from Gateway (I still have the 15GB hard drive and it still works). From the beginning, felt a certain way about the proprietary nature of the beast. That was the first, last and only time I purchased a PC out of a box from a store.
Partially out of necessity and partially out of principle I built my first PC after reading a book called "How Computers Work" by Ron White and "Building the Perfect PC" by Robert & Barbara Thompson.
Every few years or so I build a new one. Nothing serious, just something mainly used to get me around the internet and file storage.
After 20 years of tinkering, I'm still a novice.
