Forum Topic "Afraid to ask parents for things"

SilverWolf149 1 point 17 months ago

Just do it. It's not that big of a deal anyway. They pay for it with their credit card off of Amazon, and you just give them your money once the order has been finalized. Won't cost them anything.

Then just ask them. If they say no, there won't be much changing they're minds anyway.

Forum Topic "You guys like electric vehicles?"

SilverWolf149 1 point 17 months ago

I like the idea of electric vehicles. Not so much for the environmental reasons as performance. Environmentally, they currently use the same amount of energy from fossil fuels as combustion engines do. However, with the advent of renewables like solar and more efficient technology, this might change. But for me right now, performance is the catalyst. They can accelerate faster and allow more control. They aren't nearly as complex as internal combustion engines. That's what I think will start drawing people to electric. I'm nostalgic, so nothing will quite match hearing the rumble of an engine and shifting it into gear. Nothing will beat that, and I hope that in the future I'll still be able to keep an internal combustion engine, but I definitely see electric as the future.

Forum Topic "America's Gun Problem."

SilverWolf149 1 point 17 months ago

Mass shootings are a problem, but as you pointed out, they are not the biggest problem. I know this sounds cynical, but I feel that mass shootings have just become so everyday that they are nothing more to people than a way to prove the virtues of very strict gun control. On the grand scale, that wouldn't solve much, if anything

Thanks tom. I'm glad someone appreciated my attempt at a logical argument.

Forum Topic "America's Gun Problem."

SilverWolf149 2 points 17 months ago

"Guns are vital for the protection of elders when they are robbed". No, they aren't. Tasers would provide as much protection and aren't lethal. I think this would be a great replacement.

Yeah, I'd say firearms do have uses in self defense situations. And the claim that tasers don't ever kill anyone isn't true either. Other non-lethal options such as pepper spray might incapacitate or slow someone down, but if you're hopped up on drugs, or really in general, it will only really slow you down. If someone has the serious intent of causing you bodily harm, it will only slow them down from their goal. Guns do have uses in self defense. The situation might not occur as often where a citizen would have to rely on using a firearm, however the strict use of less lethal weapons won't provide the same results as needed in cases of justified self-defense.

"Removing guns completely will just mean people will use other options for murder". Yes, this is true. But it will be so much harder. The columbine shooting wouldn't have happened if the kids didn't have access to the firearms. Some will respond "oh, but they got the weapons illegally". They bought the weapons through a straw deal, an adult legally bought the weapons and then sold them to the kids illegally. No guns would've stopped this from happening.

This is true. Firearms for the most part would be out of the picture in violence. However, if your serious intent is to become a mass murderer, the legality of firearm possession won't really stop you. Columbine, for instance, was more of a failed bombing than an intentional shooting. The killers planned three different explosions. A diversionary bomb placed at a nearby park that would act as a distraction to be detonated shortly before the beginning of the attack. The main bomb, placed in the school cafeteria, set to go off at the time of day when the most people were present there, getting the largest body count. The killers then covered the main exits with their firearms, planning to shoot anyone who survived the bombs. The last bomb was placed in the killers' cars, set to detonate after the first responders and reporters showed up, killing hundreds more. They even made about 80 small pipebombs to act as grenades. None of the bombs planted completed their design, so the killers opened fire. My whole point in explaining this is that it wasn't strictly legal for the killers to make their own explosives. They still did it. Why? To get to their goal, killing the highest number of people that would rival the likes of the Federal building bombing(Columbine was even scheduled to coincide with the Federal building bombing, which was also made with illegally obtained explosives). If some sick person's goal is to kill people, they're going to go to the black market, or other sources, to obtain firearms.

"Removing guns will result in a potential government tyrannical movement and the people won't be able to do anything". I disagree with this. Australians do not carry guns and this has never even come close to happening. We're in the 21st century, and I believe properly developed countries have people educated enough to know right from wrong.

You're for the most part right. This is 2017, so a tyrannical takeover will never happen, right? Well, you stated that people should be educated enough to know right from wrong. If the recent shooting is anything to go by, that's not the case. Besides that, tyranny doesn't happen overtime. If you look at history, there usually isn't some hostile takeover of an otherwise peaceful government. The tyrants get into power by having government centralize power more and more, then the evil starts and rights are lost. You also need to remember America's history. The reason we are in existence as an independent nation is because we rebelled against our previous rulers, who we felt were violating rights and using unjust force. Americans tend to have an aversion to regulation, especially on something that is granted as on our most basic rights as citizens The second amendment is explicit about this potential issue.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Arms are available to the people to prevent against a repeat of tyrannical rule, like British colonial rule. Now, notice that it says "well regulated". Most Americans are for a better way of regulating firearms. People want guns to protect themselves and their families, and to protect their liberties. However, they don't want repeats of past mass shootings. So in short, yes, people want to be safer. But if that meant that firearms are totally illegal in the US for citizens, they'd be up in arms.

The issue of gun control is a hot topic. I don't believe that taking guns away is the answer at all. This wouldn't really fix anything, and the fear of no way to defend their rights and liberties could become a reality for American citizens.

Forum Topic "What features/specs do you want in the Samsung Galaxy S9?"

SilverWolf149 1 point 19 months ago

I currently have an S8, and some things I would like improved are:

  • Better camera

  • Longer lasting battery

  • No Bixby. I never use it anyway

  • Improved Cat Nekko easter egg. It's kind of glitchy.

One major complaint that I've seen about the S8 is the placement of the fingerprint sensor. To be fair, I don't see its placement as an issue. The reason it's located next to the camera is the physical home button was removed, and replaced with a haptic. I like the haptic feedback home button. Personally, I always use the fingerprint scanner to unlock my phone as I find it the most convenient. I haven't used any of the other biometric lock features because I find the fingerprint scanner the easiest. All I have to do is tap the scanner with my finger and it's unlocked. My fingers aren't particularly long, and even when picking the phone up I'm able to conveniently use the scanner. My biggest problem with it is that I sometimes miss the scanner and get smudges over the camera, but I only have to clean it with a cloth if that happens. So, from my personal experience, the fingerprint scanner isn't really that big of an issue. I kinda feel that everyone is just giving it crap because they're not used to putting it there.

Forum Topic "Your thoughts on US-North Korea tensions."

SilverWolf149 1 point 19 months ago

North Korea has numerous infrastructure problems. Shortages and a starved population are what they have. They have an impressive military, and nuclear capabilities. But, that doesn't mean they're on par with the US military. They are outgunned, outmanned, and essentially isolated. China or Russia would most likely not come to their aid, as they don't want to make tense relations with the US any more volatile. If there was one, a conflict with North Korea and the US would be indeed costly, but the victor is already in the cards.

Forum Topic "Xbox One X. Will it or will it not compare to PC?"

SilverWolf149 1 point 19 months ago

X Box One X is 4k(good) at 30fps(not good) and questionable graphical settings(another con).

At this point they really are just using "4k" as a marketing term. It'll just be 30fps still, with sub par graphical settings compared to a pc. I really think it'll just be another short lived splash in puddle that is the console gaming world.

Forum Topic "Your thoughts on US-North Korea tensions."

SilverWolf149 1 point 19 months ago

I truly hope that the US government is not so childish as to be tempted into firing first.

I find that unlikely. Trump isn't the best at communication, and that shows when he said that NK would pay with fire and fury if they attacked. However, I don't think he would pull the trigger first. Even if he did, I'm of the opinion that Mattis would defy the order. Besides that, NK would last literally under an hour under the force of the US armed forces. The biggest liability would be them snapping off a nuke at Guam or another piece of US territory, or attacking South Korea. That wouldn't be great.

Wisconsin. Climate will be a lot different than what you're used to in Australia, but people here are pretty nice, industry is taking off around the state, and the bigger cities are pretty nice. Food here is pretty great too. If you're looking to get education somehow, there are plenty of great technical schools and universities around. Most of Wisconsin is small town, which has it's disadvantages and advantages too. There's of course the cheap rent/real estate, and if you're looking to start over the small town atmosphere is hospitable. However, internet isn't always the best, and you will probably have to make a commute to work. The three biggest cities are Milwaukee, Madison(the capital), and Green Bay. Milwaukee was going through a rough patch before, but is now starting to pick up again. Madison is also pretty large and has been rated a lot as one of the best cities to live in. Green Bay is a great place too. It's a smaller city of about 100,000, but there are good schools and job opportunities in the surrounding area.

Whatever you decide, I hope it helps you find happiness.

Forum Topic "fidget spinners"

SilverWolf149 1 point 22 months ago

This is one of the most annoying trends I've seen. I saw fidget spinners on Massdrop before the trend started. I thought about getting one, but decided that it would be just wasted money as it would be a neat little knick knack that would probably only be used for a bit before being set aside forever. If I did carry it around everywhere with me, I'm sure it would just distract me.

Now it's just one of those every-kid-with-five-bucks' trend. It's just like those rubber band bracelets a few years ago. It will last for a few months, reaping incredible profit and attention because everyone has one, then just flopping and disappearing forever.

Things you need to 3d print.

  • Access to 3d modeling software. You need to have a 3d model of the thing you want to print, to print it. I wouldn't count on the library staff to do this for you. They might not have the right stuff or expertise to do this, as this is probably the longest part.

  • A 3d printer. The library has one, so you're good.

I found some stuff that might help. You'll have to download it and use it at the library.

With liquid cooling, a block is placed over the part being cooled. The thermal paste transfers the heat from the component to the block. There are small channels and such in the other side of the block to increase surface area. Cooling fluid then goes over that side of the block, taking the heat with it, and goes through a radiator to dissipate that heat in the air. Hoped this helped.

You're fine. What that means is that the M.2 slot shares the same bus as some of the SATA headers, and when one or the other is populated you can't use the other. You only have the one M.2 storage, so no effect will happen. If you plan on picking up a hard drive or SATA ssd later on, just make sure you plug them into the SATA header that's disabled.

Echoing Gork's remarks, I think it would be very stupid of them to release the new generation right after they launched the new titan, which made a lot of people mad because they had released the 1080ti so soon before. I really hope they don't introduce the 11 series. I hope for their sakes it's just another Nvidia Shield thing, or better yet GeForce GTX G-Assist. That would be pretty neat.

Same. Of course, Scorpio hasn't had much exposure to reviews that it's difficult to judge. But, this review has only one game tested at 4k, probably with a cherry picked or version that's souped up for the demo. I hope people don't get their hopes up too high for this.

Ah. That makes sense if this is the case, as the PS4 did come with eight GB of ram, so cost might not be so much of an issue, but performance could be a concern.
