OS Choices

I'm a Linux fan. I can't deny that. But that doesn't mean that it's THE OS, not without a fully stable compatibility layer such as Wine, or just developers making full support for it in the first place.

The OS types you can get:

  • Linux
  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • BSD
  • Solaris

I'll try and cover each OS and their upsides and downfalls. Let's start with my favorite.

Linux

Linux is an open source operating system maintained by the Linux Foundation. It prioritises speed and customisation than ease of use. Linux is only a kernel, so there are hundreds of different open source distributions (nicknamed distros) of the kernel. Some popular distributions include:

If you’re looking into getting a PC, but like want to use Linux, I would recommend WINE, a Windows program compatability layer on your distribution(s) and run GrUB (Grand Unified Bootloader) to run both Linux distros and Windows on the same computer. This process is documented heavily online.

Windows

Next we have Windows, and with it, the infamous Windows Updates system. This is the OS most common for games, but the diversity of gaming programs is improving from an OS standpoint.

MacOS

MacOS is Apple’s offering of a desktop environment. It is based on the UNIX kernel and is much worse for gaming and is less customisable than Linux, although it does have some strengths and appeal to those already integrated into the Apple ecosystem. It is legally available only through purchase of an Apple product.

BSD

Have you ever seen a PS4? Well, chances are you’ve seen a heavily modified version of BSD called Orbis OS.

Games

Here are some games I play, in no particular order:

  • Town of Salem
  • CS:GO
  • Overwatch
  • TIS-100
  • Portal 1 and 2
  • I have PUBG on my steam account but can’t run it

This description is a massive work in progress, sorry about the incomplete feel of it all!
