Great aestethics, good overclocking features etc. but it´s pricier than rivals from other vendors. I had to return first piece because of really noisy coil whine from VRM, but second piece is without problems.
This almost got a 3 star rating from me, but since the ROG Forums is active, I guess I'll give it a 4. Would have got a 5 but:
At BIOS update 0505, and ISS (Initial shipment stack) it is ultra aggressive on it's voltage provisioning at STOCK frequencies to the chip. I've been seeing (and it is widely reported by users) that it provides 1,4v with optimized defaults or ISS settings. I've personally seen it throw the mid 1,5's which is definitely not good. That power level is for running at 5,4-5,6 GHz. This makes a basically stock chip that's already warm, run even hotter than normal, with idles at 50C (!)
I would recommend advanced users to manually set VCORE, LLC, and switch off MCE for this purpose. XMP settings also provide alot more voltage than is normally required by your DIMMs, but could be easily remedied. I would suggest to start off your VCORE with lower - mid 1,2V, on adaptive mode set with a negative offset. Also, remember to keep LLC @ 5 or 6 and IA DC + IA AC load lines to 0.01, to keep the voltages that you have manually set tight.
Recommendations: Would NOT recommend purchase to beginners or users who are new to overclocking. Users who also do not have confidence to fiddle with things should also look someplace else. You are looking at a coffee lake chip with a shortened lifespan here.
Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND to users who would like to make the most out of their coffee lake. The board is TIGHT. It may be entry level, but it does exactly the same thing as what the Formula and Code do, without the Croschill EK II Waterblock.
Great board, great Bios, cool RGB. Easy to use and understand.
Pros: The RGB lights look B-E-A-UTIFUL and this is a high-quality mobo with plenty of features (all useful)
Cons: This mobo has a BIOS setting that "tunes" the CPU, and was causing our i7-8700K to receive too much power, and to idle at 56C while running the BIOS at the stock frequency. Turned it off and now it's OC'd to 5.0 GHz and idles at 32C
Z370 chipset and handles overclocking extremely well. and has preset overclocking features for noobs.
I was really interested in the GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Gaming 7 and was about to buy it until I realized it was missing a key feature I wanted on my motherboard, namely Wi-Fi AC
It looks great with its subtle RGB lighting, overclocks with ease, Wi-Fi, includes a M.2 heatsink, and had 2 x USB 3.1 Gen2 ports (1 x Type-A [red] and 1 x Type-C [black]) on the rear and an internal onboard 3.1 gen 2 connector for my front port.
Make sure you turn the CPU fan setting in the BIOS to 100% or the H100i v2 will not cool properly. My i7-8700K now overclocks to 5.0 GHz and idles at 35.1C
This is a great motherboard. The bios is easy to navigate and it's loaded with features. The XMP profile worked great for my Trident Z DDR4-3200.
The BIOS option to display CPU temp on debug led on-board after successful boot is a really cool option. I like being able to glance over and see my CPU temps.
great board only issue was getting Aura to work properly then again thats more of a asus problem then this mb
I considered the ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming motherboard but went for the Maximus Hero X because of the added USB ports as I have a several external hard drives for photo storage. I appreciated the included SATA cables that let me hook up my optical drive and the 4TB HDD. Nice board!
Great board for over clocking, quality feels high end, only one 2.0 usb. You will need to buy Corsair commander pro adaptor or Nzxt 2.0 usb extender for more ports.
Solid board and a good choice overall The status codes were interesting to me during build and initial setup, then glaring after, disturbing the look of the interior of the case. I dealt with that by 3D printing a cover for the LED code spot on the board. Wish I could cover the power and HDD/SSD lights on the board, but haven't figured that out yet. Appearance gripes aside, this MB has done all I've asked of it so far, and was easy to build on. Feels solid (it should, at this price!) and works well.
