Portable LAN Build

Description

Preface

This build is intended to deliver high-quality gaming in a small, portable PC that you can take to LANs. With that in mind, a mini-ITX case and motherboard have been selected. A generic term for this kind of PC is Small Form Factor, abbreviated to SFF.

CPU and Cooler

The new Ryzen 5 3600 is a 6-core processor that utilizes AMD SMT technology for a total of 12 threads. This CPU is one of the top models of the new, 2nd-generation Ryzen processors. The 3600 comes with a good CPU cooler, so there's no need for a 3rd party cooler.

Motherboard

We're using a parametric filter to constantly select the best-priced mini ITX motherboard with a X570 chipset. The compatibility engine will filter out anything not compatible with the build. Since the X570 chipset is new, there may not be as many mITX X570 motherboards available. Should stock or pricing be an issue, you can select a B450 chipset motherboard instead. However, read the warning below regarding this decision.

The X570 chipset was selected rather than the B450 chipset in order to bypass any BIOS update issues that would occur when combining a new Ryzen 3000 series (Zen 2) CPU with a B450 chipset. However, you are welcome to explore those options as well, but be forewarned that because it uses an older chipset, this motherboard may require a BIOS update before it will be compatible with the CPU. The manufacturer may have already updated the B450 BIOS before sending it to retailers, but if not, many motherboards cannot be updated without using an older CPU to do so.

If the motherboard is not updated, the PC is unlikely to boot at all with the new CPU. In this case, you would need to temporarily use an older CPU to update the motherboard BIOS before using a new CPU with it. The CPUs that could do this update would be the Ryzen 1000 CPUs, Ryzen 2000 APUs, and Ryzen 2000 CPUs.

If you stick with the X570 chipset on original part list provided, you will not have to deal with this process.

Memory

For our memory, the parametric filter finds the best price on 16GB kits of memory that are within AMD’s recommended specifications. We've limited it to DDR4-3200 and faster, as Ryzen CPUs scale well with higher frequency memory.

Storage

We're using a parametric filter to incorporate an SSD with at least 960GB. It's often a good idea to download your games prior to attending a LAN, so an SSD with some more space is a good idea. Bumping up to a 2TB SSD or adding an extra 3.5" mechanical drive for these purposes may not be a bad idea, depending on how many games you want to have ready to play as soon as you set up at the LAN. Everyone's storage needs differs, so feel free to change those capacities to your heart's desire.

GPU

For our GPU, the new AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT has great performance for the price. It will perform great on every game out there at 2560x1440 and/or higher refresh rate monitors like 120 or 144Hz.

Case

The sleek and small In Win A1 Plus will be stylishly showing off this PC's components.

The bottom of the case sports a tinted transparent stand with ARGB LEDs to emit a really cool glow. Even more unique, though, is the top. This case's top doubles as a 10W Qi wireless phone charger! In the front of the case, you'll find 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and on the side is a tempered glass window.

Inside the case, there is room for full length video cards, and two RGB fans are included.

PSU

The A1 Plus incudes its own 650W power supply, which will be sufficient for our needs

Compatibility: No issues or incompatibilities found.
