So if I get an ASUS STRIX, it's fine to just not use Afterburner other than for fan speed curves?

Asus GPU TWeak II has more control over their GPUs than afterburner has. Afterburner is simpler to use but GPU Tweak gives you a LOT more monitoring options and granular control.

I would use that one over AFterburner for an Asus Strix card.
