My Project: Xeon is on TechSource's PC WARS EP 27

I must say that I love this build. My absolute favorite build that I have done. I really wish it was looked at more than it is. I wish that it was featured for more people to see my creation or what I like to call... A work of art!! I hope whom ever comes across this appreciates this build as much as I do :D

Project: Xeon

(My first custom loop EVER!!)

This is an Aesthetics Water-cooled Build (FUN! FUN! FUN!)

This is a side project for me. I have complete builds already and always wanted a project build. Ive always wanted to do a custom loop but wanted a project build to work on slowly instead of one of my main rigs

My personal 2 complete builds:

Zombie Hunter 2 watercooled w/ a 1080 ti

and my

Phantecks Home Theater Build w/ a 1080 (Already has AIO on cpu/gpu)

How and why I did this build

I am an addict and I am addicted to pc building and modding. I probably spend more time modding/building than actually gaming..... But it's a hobby and a love and I try to have fun with almost everything I build! I really wanted to get into water-cooling and this is my intro to it. First time and I'm hooked!!

Have you ever asked or heard questions like:

Is an intel xeon cpu good for gaming?

I have read many and watched many videos and NEVER really got an answer... I thought heck if an older inter i7/xeon has 4/6/8/10/12 cores 3-4 years ago can they be used in todays gaming and 4k gaming?

CPU: Well I decided to find out. I purchased an xeon E5-1620 v2 4 core/8 thread 3.7GHz w/ a 3.9GHz turbo for only a shocking $60 and liked the performance. So I sold it and upgraded to the Xeon E5-1660 v2 which is a 6 core/12 thread 3.7ghz w/ a 4ghz turbo.

Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1660 v2 Socket: LGA 2011 Clockspeed: 3.7 GHz Turbo Speed: 4.0 GHz No of Cores: 6 No of Threads: 12

Watch this video: Core vs Xeon: Which Intel CPU should you choose?

Video Card I already own a 1080 and a 1080 ti (that I game in 4k) already. I didn't want to spend too much and wanted a gpu that could rock 1080p and be very well overclocked. The 780 ti was I think the best option for me price/performance and the gpu waterblock was less expensive. Still trying to figure out the best overclock for this card.

Water Cooling I've always wanted to get into water-cooling. This build was my foot in the door. I am now taking apart my Zombie Hunter Build and am custom looping that too. I plan on overclocking the shiznit out of it too :D

Watercooling Parts: XSPC D5 Photon Reservoir/Pump Combo, 270mm XSPC EX240 240mm White Radiators PrimoChill 1/2in. Rigid PETG Clear Tubes PrimoChill 1/2in. Rigid RevolverSX Series Fittings Barrow G1/4" 90° Rotary Fittings XSPC Razor GTX Titan / 780 / 780Ti V2 Waterblock

Mods Needed to Do This: Custom bracket made and painted red to hold XSPC D5 Photon Reservoir/Pump also needed to remove the hard drive rack and 5.25 bays to fit the reservoir/pump, vertical graphics card, custom made and painted power supply cover, I removed and painted the front grill of case red, I removed and painted the XSPC gpu block plate red. Also had to trim the memory stick heatsinks to fit the top rad and fans.

Conclusion: This build was FUN!!! I honestly have no plans for this pc. Probably will put it in the living-room for mostly decoration but I'll hook it up to my 55" vizio down there as a spare pc...IDK but this was FUN as hell to build. Never had so much fun and can't wait to custom water loop my Zombie Hunter Build

I had FUN building the loop. My first EVER!!!

This is an artwork to me. I honestly will probably get hate comments for a Xeon and a 780 ti but that's okay. The Xeon kicks azz and the 780 ti still holds up. On 3DMark 11 Performance I went from a P13,050 score to a P15,056 score after overclocking the 780 ti. I already have 2 rigs w/ 1080/1080ti and don't need another $700+ video card.

Special Thanks to Titan Rig from Amazon for most of the parts I ordered delivered extremely fast and well.....Thank you!!

Part Reviews

CPU

Most people don't know or even heard of this cpu..... It's a 6 core 12 thread 3.7ghz beast that I've personally tested up against my 7700k and it goes toe to toe. If I could do it over again I would of bought cpus like this years ago and built on them

Case

This is a great low end case that looks mid to upper I think. They make black, white, red, and blue colors. Great case with decent customization options I think. I purchased 3 of them at $50 each for myself and client builds. There is a lack of cable management options but you have to be creative

Power Supply

I'd definitely buy this again!

Sounds like you have a business model, use it. Do what you love and get paid for it.

Beautifull !

Thank you for all the benchmarks.

Could you tell me about the motherboard ?

Thank you. I am in absolute love with this one. My favorite build I've done yet and I've done lots

The board is a no name Intel x79 board. Just search eBay or Amazon for "x79 motherboard" and you'll see them. I wanted to give one a try and picked up one with a Xeon chip and it performed perfectly.

It has basic old style bios, USB 3.0, and supports all kinds of ddr3 ram. Mine has a vrm heatsink but some don't. I'd avoid those. I did not, and would not overclock my cpu. I wouldn't recommend it. I've heard. People bricking the mobo and noting that they had an oc on the cpu. The board only uses 4pin cpu power so that tells me don't overclock!!

Hope that helps and thanx for looking!!

Yes cool. The close up on the CPU/RAM with LED is my favorite.

How is fan plugging/ fan control with thoose boards ? I am into air cooling/silent rigs and I already got a good deal on an x99 board but I am very curious about the chineese x58/x79 boards.

The fan pins were my only negative on this. There are only 2 on the board. I am using a rosewill fan hub. It does have a smart fan feature in bios but I have my fans on full blast. I only have 5 fans 4 on the rads so I didn't want to lower them any

Go look at my YouTube channel I have videos gaming in 4k with a $70 e5-1620v2 4 core 3.7ghz cpu and a 1080 ti using this computer https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbktM-Pfv2_CfImN9NxU4cg

I really like that this isn't another 7700k 1080ti watercooled build. Yours has a lot more character and creativity. +1 :)

For a first attempt you look like a pro! This thing is artwork. I really like the way you made your bends and the contrasts you got. This is amazing looking. I always wanted to go custom loop and I have two builds that are crying out for it. I just tinker with them so much that the thought of undoing the loop the change parts just kills me. On the other hand maybe it will keep me from tinkering ;)

Thank you... I feel the same way about everything you said... I call this artwork too. Was hoping for a feature but I guess being I didn't use a 1080 ti and 8700k its not worthy :D

My bends came out great. My favorite is the bottom one coming out of the rads to the pump. Love the curve. I eyeballed most of it. Draining the loop isn't to hard either. I'm about to drain and put a different cpu block this week.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO LOOK!!

That was my favorite bend too.

You could try to push for 4.2Ghz cause this Xeon has an unlocked multiplier. Especially if this is under water. Just be VERY CAREFUL with the System Agent voltage. Anything above 1.05V System Agent is the danger zone. Anything above 1.2V VTT is danger too.

If the BIOS has extremely limited options though... you're out of luck there. You may be better going with a Asrock X79 Extreme4-M in that case.

I don't trust this motherboard enough to overclock it honestly. Plus I think the cpu is much stronger than the gpu so I just overclocked the 780 ti instead. The 6 core at 3.7ghz is plenty.

I'm actually sadly going to be taking this apart. It was a spare project build. It was fun but I'm going to be merging it with my Movieroom HTPC Build and watercooling that... New project... Yay!!

If you do find a ASRock mATX X79 board though, definitely go for it, cause it will allow you to OC your Xeon.

Oh yeah... I've seen your build. It the one with the overclocked e5-1660. I'm going to be selling the x79 board and cpu. The other build has an as rock z170 and a 6700k, going to use that for next build instead. Probably the better choice of the two

Amazing! Could have done a little better with the bends, but a feature worthy creative build.

Thank you very much, I was hoping for a feature but didn't get one :( But my Zombie Hunter build did :)

It was my first loop ever. Now that I've done 3 I see my flaws in this one. And in my opinion I'm happy with most of the bends except the main one that goes to the gpu... And that was my first bend ever... Didn't even do any practice bends.

Thank you for looking!!

I really liked your zombie hunter, it was superb, incredible theme and bends. I really want to do a custom loop but they are so expensive! I will remember to do practice bends then. I believe thermaltake sells a kit that includes the tube inserts and angles for doing bends, could have been helpful ;).

Great build. I worked with Fractal on this case design! It's so cool to see it utilized to it's full potential.
