Tried and True i7-950 Build

by defnotclutch

Old i7-950 PC recently updated with new cooling fans, CPU cooler, SSD, and 24GB of RAM.

Part Reviews

Running strong since 2010! No issues running Win10, the latest games, etc.

Great case back in 2010 for the price, but with many drives & cards installed, it is very difficult to run the cables without it looking terrible. The case doesn't have space to 'grow into.' If you want to use the area behind the drive bays to run cables and plug the HDDs in from the front, you can't install the front fans. Without these fans, the airflow into the back of the case where it's REALLY needed is poor.

-1 star for lack of cable management/ space. -1 star for the front fan issue.

Case Fan

Can't even hear them. Whisper quiet.

Amazing board. Slightly loud due to the keys bottoming out (even without blues). I put two o-rings on each key, and the noise is much more tolerable now. The RGB lighting is great & there are many profiles on the website that people have developed.

Perfect fit in my hand. Nice cross between a little 'claw' mouse and a 'palm' one. The sides have a roughness to them that feels nice, and the overall weight is a nice change of pace from the plastic mouses out there.

Running good Since '08, decent sound. Not the prettiest design, as they look a little 'alien.' I also could have done without the little volume/etc meter as most other peripherals have audio ports anymore (keyboards, etc.) And there are plenty of wireless headphones out there too. It gets in the way more often than being useful.

I love funny RAM amounts, being different I see! Very nice, +1 for the 1st gen i7

It does seem funny to be at 24GB, but this board (being triple channel, and therefore a multiple of three) supports a max of 24GB. I'll tell you what though, after the SSD upgrade, this made a WORLD of difference in Windows 10 vs. the 8GB I used to have.

Love it true use of DDR3 triple channel. Nice pc. Nice cpu. Will your motherboard allow overclocking? That cpu with that cooler should overclock wonderfully past 4.0 ghz. Nicely done +1

Oh more pics please

I haven't tried OCing the CPU since I got the cooler. It didn't work well with my previous cooler (coolermaster V8). Maybe it's worth a go this time? Unfortunately though, the Gigabyte board isn't playing nice with the RAM so the speed is throttled down to 1066, but with 24GB, I'll never notice..

Dang that sucks. Old overclocking was more a labor of love back in the day. Now with the fantastic bios it's a breeze.

Nice, i just got a classic i7-920 for free today and i also had a 660ti lying around

Gooberdad 10 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Sweet. I still like the 660ti. That old 920 was a heater for sure, but it would overclock well under the right settings. It's just hard to justify paying what people want for the motherboard to use the old cpu. It's great when you have the parts around to make it run though.

Nice! The 660Ti has served me well. I replaced two Sapphire 6870's in crossfire a few years back and WOW, never going back to AMD now. It's totally worth the extra $$

I have run 4.2Ghz on that same CPU for four+ years solid with no issues. That processor runs hot, but dang it has served faithfully. Used to be air cooled even. Old CM V8 cooler. Now I'm using that same H80i cooler since my V8 died on me. Recently upgraded from a 3GB 580 GTX to the 980Ti. (The 580 GTX still going strong after being OC'd to 1000mhz core for three+ years) Running Fallout 4 1920x1200 Maxed settings, solidly at 60FPS. Been using 12GB ram for a long time now, crazy how often I can get up over 10GB usage. Awesome to see a similar build to mine still running strong.

What MB are you using? Settings? I'm thinking of giving OC'ing another go... Going to have to refresh my memory a bit first tho. There's a nice guide on overclockers.com specifically for these processors that I'm thinking of following. Thoughts?

I can't remember exactly my settings for everything, but my multiplier is x21 and bus speed is 200MHz, voltage is 1.352V. Not been displeased, I definitely got lucky on that CPU, its about a 27% overclock.

Ram is set to 1600 MHz through XMP profile. 9/9/9 latency, all at 1.5V.
