Description

My mom's cousin fell for one of the classic "there's something wrong with your computer! let us remote in and fix it for you!" scams and brought this desktop to me.

Thankfully, as soon as they asked for money, she turned them down and hung up, but she was still having problems with the computer. Windows 7 had gone into safe mode it looked like, but instead of trying to get Windows 7 booting normally again, I offered her some upgrades.

The machine wasn't the best even when it was new. It was running an AMD Sempron SINGLE CORE processor with 2GB of RAM. It just so happened that I had an Athlon laying around that I was able to throw in without any issues.

One interesting thing is the motherboard actually had onboard nvidia graphics; the nVidia GeForce 6150SE. I was able to kind of get it to work with Windows 10, but I didn't want to compromise stability. I threw in a GT 610 I had lying around that I got for $5 that will work perfectly for what she needs.

After doubling the RAM, it's actually not an awful machine. I wish I had an SSD to throw in there, but I was on a bit of a time crunch and didn't have the time to order one. It's still a lot better than it was before withe Windows 10 installed fresh vs Windows 7. Hopefully she'll get a few more years out of this little guy!

Haha, there's always someone with a better GPU than you, but there's also always someone with something worse!

I didn't have the time to run any on this specific machine but I do have some results from a run I did with the same CPU in a different system:

I see, what kind of computing tasks does your cousin do on this machine?

Sorry for the late reply. This computer is for very basic home office use. Surfing the internet and word documents. Might not even be streaming any video.
