Description

I did a Gpu upgrade and decided to get a new case while getting the card. Microcenter has the NZXT S340 in a black and yellow theme and it went well with my motherboards color scheme so i had to pick it up as well. My previous case was a NZXT Switch 810 Full Tower, with that experience i was confident the S340 would not disappoint. I am extremely happy with the case the way it handles cable management with the PSU shroud and the vertical plate they have in the case for covering up cables. i love the black and yellow look and if Msi decides to release a GTX 980 Ti lightning i will surely be getting that to match the rest of the build. The Gpu i decided to upgrade to from my MSI GTX 660 OC was a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 960 4GB model. The card runs fantastic and stays cool under load. The triple fan deisgn on the card does a great job at keeping the card cool in this much smaller case compared to how huge the Switch 810 was. it has a very nice blue windforce logo and very pleasing backplate on the top of the card. My only complaint would be on the case and its cheap polycarbonate window, it scratches way to easily and i will be replacing it with an acrylic one.

Throwing jipster a bone to work with:

"Yeah, uh huh, you know what it is..." or "So this is what Bumblebee must look like on the inside!"

Looks great, very clean. I'm not usually a fan of the vertical monitor, but having two on the outside is actually pretty nice.

Beautiful. I'm planning a build with a black and blue version of this same case, so seeing this makes me excited. One question, what do you have in the top of the case that sheds light on the inside from above?

  • 1 point

did they just plug into your mobo?

  • 1 point

the light plugs into a small box shown in my 3rd photo it's the light blue box on the top of the case than from there it connects to a 4 pin molex on psu

  • 1 point

Also, I like how you ran the tubes for the liquid cooler behind the yellow thing to the front of the case. Most people mount their liquid cooler fan right there next to it at the back and its just all jumbled up.

[REMOVED]

this is what i used for the light. imo i've used a couple of different brands for these lights and they always come with really crappy Velcro tape for mounting. it always falls off lol so i just go out and get 3M double sided foam tape. that stuff works awesome and the light never falls down when i use it. also i am glad you like the build!

The only Lightning I remember was the 290X, I'm hoping they'll do a lightning in the 390x

  • 1 point

they had one for the 780, and right after they released that card nvidia released the 780 ti so msi had to lower the price they had on the 780 which apparently hurt them (so i read) only rumors atm on a 980 ti lightning. hopefully it comes out and if they do a 390x lightning they'd be awesome

I was thinking the same. I modded my G1 and changed the LEDs from blue to red. I think doing the same would really polish this build off nicely.

I got the tutorial from here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1519475/gigabyte-g1-gaming-geforce-gtx-960-970-980-led-swap

You just need a soldering iron and a steadyish hand (plus the LEDs ofc).

switch 810 was to big for my desk and s340 black and yellow lol. the switch 810 will not be neglected though, i'm selling it to my friend who is gonna use it to its full potential and do a custom loop in it.

It hurts me to up-vote this since you spent $242 on a 960, but its a job well done.

  • 1 point

xD was a 30 dollar price difference for 4gb model

  • 1 point

The 960 isn't optimized for 4gb, I saw an amazing analogy for this on some topic but, it was like:

A big bottle with the same size neck as a smaller bottle gives the same amount of liquid. Basically you gain nothing performance wise out of the 4gb model.

  • 1 point

hmm makes sense, yeah i really didn't do research on 2gb vs 4gb on the 960, i had the 2gb model and it had artifacts and when i went to exchange noticed they had 4gb models and just picked that up, sadly it is to late for me to exchange it again :/

  • 1 point

It was less that it was the 4Gb model and more that it was a 960 in general.

  • 1 point

i dont play any games really that demand that high of a gpu. i generally play MMOs and no MMOs out there are graphic intensive enough for me to get anything higher than a mid-range card, the exception being if msi releases a lightning edition of a high end card i would get it simply to match the build

The 2 side monitors look like they'd be great for studio work. Anything with lists, even itunes. Love that you used yellow. Too many black and red or blue builds. I'm working on a black and gold build myself.

  • 1 point

Yeah they come in handy a lot, too true about the black and red/blue. Probably cause the majority of mobo's are the same black and red/blue theme. Nice to see builds out of that color scheme, that's exactly what I was aiming for and good luck with the black and gold build! I am sure it will look amazing!

  • 1 point

Let me start by saying well done on this.

That being said, my biggest complaint is the video card. It doesn't really fit the theme here. Also, I would've probably put the 120mm rad on the rear exhaust of the case rather than the front intake.

  • 1 point

ty! yeah no card currently goes with this theme at least within the 900 series, i am hoping msi comes out with a 980 ti lightning edition or 390x lightning edition. i have the rad on the front intake pulling in cool air rather than pulling heat from gpu out, or are you recommending it on back pulling air in?

  • 1 point

Nah, exhaust on rear. It shouldn't really make a difference as the amount of air movement across a rad is more significant than whether it's warm or cool.

  • 1 point

ah i see, appreciate the tip!

  • 1 point

Little odd for a 960 built into the price range, but everything else is so well thought out, with that color scheme, I wish I could leave you a +2 instead. =P

  • 1 point

ty! yeah its the monitors/peripherals that make it go up that high xD i mainly play MMOs on a 1920 x 1200 monitor so anything over a mid range card would be overkill for me. the SSD's were pricey at the time i got them, i have 1 for OS and main programs, second one is for steam games and third is for photography

I really like the NZXT cases that have the dual SSD mounts on the PSU shroud. My favorite being the H440, but the S340 is an excellent case as well. I really like the fact that the sticker labels on your Intel SSD's match the rest of your color scheme. It looks really nice. +1

If your looking for recommendations, I'll through my thoughts in.

I would recommend getting the light bar upgrade for your dominators. I think it would be worth a shot to try and mod the light bar to be yellow to match the rest of your build. If I were you, this would be my first priority because having different textured dominators would drive me insane.

The Windforce LED on the GPU looks really out of place. I think changing the LED to either yellow or a pure white would look better. If you do end up getting the light bar upgrade for your dominators, it might look cool if the blue light bar that comes with the kit matches the LED on the GPU.

And get some sleeved cables! This build deserves it!

Just my thoughts, don't take it too seriously.

Well done and best of luck with future upgrades and have fun with your new toy.

  • 2 points

Ty! Yeah I have the 8 pin sleeved cable already and currently waiting for my local Microcenter to get the 6 pin one in stock. The GPU im not gonna mess with for im hoping MSI releases the Lightning edition of the 980 ti, if they don't than I will consider the light mod for the windforce logo. The different texture dominators are quite annoying lol I'll look into the light bar mod. Thx for the recommendations and glad you enjoy the build!

  • 1 point

Glad to hear you are investing in sleeved cables.

If the MSI 980 ti Lightning will be anything like the MSI 780 ti Lightning, it will look so damn sexy in this build. I would say you don't have an excuse not to get it.

If you ever decide to do it, good luck with the light bar mod.

Make sure you update your build with more pictures when you do these upgrades. I am sure many people, including myself, would love to see your work.

Why did you get a GTX 960 in a 3K build? Why, you could have gotten less SSDs and then max out every game at 1080p or 1440p, but no, you unnecessarily fast RAM, an unnecessary amount of SSDs , and you bought a $200 motherboard to overclock your CPU which is already good enough so overclocking won't make a huge difference. You could have have gotten not one, but two Titan X's or GTX 980 Tis, and still have plenty of money lesft to buy SSDs and a good CPU. Geez need to do more research before buying a computer.

  • 1 point

not everything was purchased at once. i don't play any high demanding games and don't intend to purchase a higher res monitor anytime in the near future. i primarily play MMO's and none on the market requires anything higher than a mid range card, the 660 i had before maxed out all the games i play. the ram was overkill i am aware i got dominator platinums for the look. i didn't buy all the ssd's at once and bought more over time cause i ran out of space for games etc. i am quite aware i could've gotten better parts for less than what i spent lol but that was not the point of this build, it was a black and yellow theme, had i wish for more performance per dollar i would've done so

  • 1 point

Caught my attention when I saw it was a $2700 GTX 960 build.

It was originally Jipster's comments but I'm not sure why he was getting down voted so much. So I cannot blame him for removing them. I know not everyone likes certain jokes. Maybe it felt less of one in their own eyes and through their understanding thought it was offensive, I guess. Again, I'm not sure why for the down-votes but that's why there has been some removed comments.

Indeed he is a gentleman, between all those humorous comments that I tend to not get unless a light-bulb went off. One must not judge a book by its cover. :)

And not everyone takes comments as a grain of salt, depending what may have been said. And no matter what one says or does, you will always have someone who doesn't like you. So yes it's not very kind whoever keeps repeating some of these down-votes lately.

The system can get misused like everything else, sadly. Yet this karma system doesn't truly define who we are as a whole. Anyone and all of us can agree or disagree with comments. Sadly, it feels like we have some negative votes around and I been noticing it since yesterday.
