I work in IT and have always been interested in computing so naturally I've always wanted to build a computer of my own, after lurking around pcpartpicker, gumtree & amazon for the last few months, researching and tallying up a budget, I finally took the plunge and bought all of my parts in one sweep.
Within 24 hrs the parts arrived (+1 Amazon Prime) and with the whole weekend to myself this is the perfect time to build!
I've gone for a fairly sensible budget gaming PC that meets all of my needs, of course I could've gone for the i7 4790k, h100i watercooled, GTX 1080 and the rest but realistically this is what I could afford and I am very happy with the results!
My White & Black build!
Built in under 12 hours in total, with Windows 10 issues slowing me down the most! (It's legit!)
Please feel free to ask any questions and offer any advice/ constructive criticism - I'm happy to hear it.
Thanks for reading chaps.
If anyone is interested I have wrote a quick review for each main component based on what lead me to choosing this part and what my thoughts are on it after installing them:
CPU Choice - 4690K 3.5Ghz, I have read a lot of reviews on processors and compared even more benchmarks and from what I could work out the i7 4790k does not provide enough of an improvement on the i5 4690k to justify a £100 additional spend, because of this I have stuck with the 3.5Ghz i5 version that I will be able to overclock if I decided to upgrade to water cooled.
CPU Opinion - I am very impressed! I believe it is very good value for money given the performance.. The Stock cooler? Not so much - although it will keep your CPU cool enough, you will definitely want to upgrade to a aftermarket CPU cooler if you want to overclock or even just for aesthetics.
CPU Cooler Choice - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, the reviews speak for themselves, thousands of happy customers went with the 212 EVO for it's effectiveness and at 27.99 it was a clear choice for my modest budget.
CPU Opinion- Great cooling for a tiny price, it looks cool and you can barely hear it. My only word of warning on this is believe what you read, it is HUGE - do the research and make sure it will fit your build too! This cooler has to sit almost 1cm above the Heatsink so that I could use all 4 RAM slots, in order to fit the cooler directly on I would have to remove 1 stick of RAM (unless I went for 2x8GB)
Motherboard Choice - MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition, The reviews for this motherboard were great, boasting a tonne of features, USB slots and display ports; the onboard BIOS allow easy overclocking and it is undeniably nice to look at.
Motherboard Opinion - The reviews were right, I admittedly chose this motherboard mostly because there are very few Z97 chipset motherboards in black/white but this doesn't take away from the features and how nice it is to look at.
RAM/Memory Choice - Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3-2400Mhz, DDR3, Great reviews, Black&Silver(Whiteish) the ability to OC to 2400Mhz with ease were all my factors in choosing this RAM.
RAM/Memory Opinion- It's great, OC'ed with ease, Looks nice, Performs well - no issues so far. Very happy!
GPU Choice - MSI GeForce GTX 960 4GB, I have used the website GPUBOSS over time and had come to the conclusion the GTX960 was more than powerful enough for my current needs, I was tempted to buy the GTX 970 but after spotting the 960 on Gumtree for £120 brand new boxed I could not resist and snapped it up.
GPU Opinion - So far so good, I am able to play Battlefield 4 on Ultra Settings and every other game I own has played on max settings at 1920 x 1080 with no issues; I am very impressed and it was an added bonus that the card matched my style set with black and white trims, completing the style.
