Description

This machine will search through Mersenne primes and do other CPU-intensive work happily and snappily.

Please don't use this CPU for gaming.

Run Linux on this.

EDIT: welp finally did it, reached the 4.3 barrier.

Part Reviews

Motherboard

A tiny bit hard to use, but very useful for overclocking. Supports Broadwell-E out of the box.

Case Fan

A very powerful casefan. Without this, my overclocked 6950X would probably overheat.

Not for people who want to build something that stays on 24/7. 60dB is modestly loud for a computer.

Thinking about getting the same CPU and CPU Cooler. How's the H100i v2 performing with that CPU? And do you keep this machine all day or do you turn it off when not using it?

Tweak the pump curves aggressively, although a stock 6950X might perform fine without pump curve tweaking in the BIOS. I don't keep this machine on 24/7.

In workloads that heavily rely on threads and clock speed, a 4.0Ghz 10 core will happily beat out a 2-2.4Ghz 14 or 16 core.

Not sure whether or not a Xeon can be overclocked. I might be reiterating the Pentium 4 history, though.

yep, from what I've seen, you might be able to get an extra 50 MHz from a xeon. If you're really lucky.

I find that adjusting BCLK with this setup is harsh, but that's pretty much comparing oranges to grapefruit. Adjusting BCLK is almost your only way out when you got a non-K SKU.

Anyways, here's the benchmarks for a Xeon E5 that has similar performance to an i7-6950X.

Again, comparing oranges to grapefruit...
