I have upgraded the CPU to a 4690k, and the R9 285 died again, so I got store credit and got a Gigabyte R9 380 4GB card instead. It is much cooler, (like 15 deg cooler) has more memory, and performs a bit better. The 4690k is waayyyyy better than the G3258, due to more cores and better overclocking.
WHY I BUILT THIS PC
I built this PC a few weeks ago, I use it mostly for gaming, web browsing, all sorts of stuff (mostly gaming), and when I built it, unfortunately I found out that the GPU was DOA, but I got that resolved and got a functioning one.
I chose the G3258 for it's value, and price, I have it overclocked to 4.2 GHz but it's mostly a placeholder until I get a better CPU (4690k or a 4790k).
I chose the Hyper 212 EVO because of how good of an air cooler it is for $30, keeps my CPU in good temps.
The motherboard was a tough choice, but I chose the GA-Z97-HD3 because of the fairly nice looking orange LEDs on it, is very cheap for a Z97 board, and has the features I need. The only gripe I have against it is that I had to buy another SATA cable, since it only came with 2.
The RAM I chose because it looks great in a red/black themed case, and I will upgrade to another stick of 8GB later.
I chose the HDD because it has a ton of reviews, is cheap, and yeah, that's pretty much it. Functions good as a storage drive.
The SSD is not listed on PPP, but I chose it for it's price, is fast, and it functions well as a boot drive.
The graphics card I got mostly because I found it really cheap on sale (153.99 after rebate), and it crushes games at max settings (I am running a 1440x900 monitor)
The case was a very hard decision, I chose it for it's price, great cable management, quietness (I can barely hear it!) and simplicity.
I chose the PSU for it's not catching-on-fire feature, way enough headroom for upgrades, and it looks nice.
The optical drive was a simple choice, just chose a super cheap drive and that's it. (Does anyone still actually use these day-to-day?)
The OS was a free from a neighbor, it's a great OS.
Finally, the mouse was REALLY cheap (got it on sale) and the LED lights give it customizability, plus the extra buttons are nice. Overall, this build turned out pretty good for a first build! My camera is literally a potato btw.
GREAT CPU! It is a great overclocker, 4 cores, and is much better than the G3258!
Great cooler! Installation took over an hour to figure out, but eventually got it!
Great board, has the features I need, but only 2 SATA cables? Really?
Great RAM, not much to say about it.
Best budget HDD, I would recommend this with an SSD for boot drive.
MUCH cooler than the previous defective ASUS STRIX R9 285. The GIGABYTE card has a sexy blue LED WINDFORCE logo, the card is surprisingly small, and it performs REALLY WELL on a 900P monitor!
Amazing case! Cable management is great, It looks good, the window lets you see inside, it's REALLY silent, has dust filters, overall a great case. Would recommend!
Hasn't exploded. 10/10
As of now, I have only used this for installing Windows.
Got it for free, can't complain!
Great mouse, LEDs look great, is ergonomic, the DPI buttons are nice, the extra buttons are useful. It is a fingerprint/grease magnet though. 9/10
