Description

Edit* Thanks PCPP for the feature!

I also have a video of the build that you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVBoMU_Ix0Q

I started this system over a year and a half ago, though it still isn't the build that took me the longest. The goal I wanted to accomplish was to prove that workstations can also be sexy, they don't have to be black or beige boxes. On top of that, I've always wanted to do a Steampunk build and so I figured, why not, lets do them altogether.

Pretty much every single component at this point has been modded/painted in some way. Every single piece of the case was modded in some way and painted. Every single screw for every single component was painted. The blocks/backplates were custom copper plated by my previous employer, EK Water Blocks.

Other details include:

The 2 gauges on the side are fully functional and show CPU/RAM usage

The nixie tubes up top are functional and show display water temperature via in line temp sensors

Genuine 100% real leather and brass, all cut by hand

All rivets were done by hand

This build uses over 200 fittings, every single one of them was either painted or sanded down to the brass

I'm really happy with the results and I hope everyone here enjoys it as well. I'll be posting an entire build log soon!

This build will be used for my new business venture to edit and create 4k content.

If I add my monitors, keyboard, mouse, and the cost of all the modding materials, I could easily take 2nd. Maybe 1st if I really wanted to learn how much I spent. Spoiler: I don't, and neither does the girlfriend.

Looking at the builds in detail, now that I see that I've only been out done by a recording studio and 2 home theaters, I can live with myself.

This build's theme is so cyberpunk and ancient looking as if this PC (and giving by the components in general) look like some ancient technology we didn't reach yet.

  • 3 points

Steampunk, not cyberpunk.

Right. Forgot the differences.

  • 3 points

Those people added their kitchen sink and garage door to their build to pad the price. I don't even include my monitor speakers amps keyboard etc to mine either. The build price should be strictly the pc. For the build, it's not my taste but I can appreciate the effort that went into it. Did Ek sponsor this build? While I see you took great effort in adding small touches to many of the EK items but they seem to be left in a way that I can easily tell they are EK products. Given the extent in which you went to mod the case, and other items it seems the Ek items were done minimally with purpose. I know you use to work for EK and perhaps that is the reasoning. I understand there might be obligations to approach the mod in certain ways as a result. However, that to me is the weakest point of an overall amazing and outstanding mod.

The thing is though, after this, everybody else will think that their build is inferior.

And they're right, but man, you just have to think to yourself, "Why can't I make my build as good as this?" And then you go to the bar, have a couple of drinks, and remind yourself that this world is still worth living for.

Everyday I wake up to check the newest featured build. Everyday I wait patiently for a new feature to come around. Everyday I ponder if the next one and/or the current one is worth a feature. I sit and wait at my computer browsing through the completed builds looking for something truly worthy of a PCPP feature. Something that screams effort and determination. I have seen many a features in my time on this wonderful website and they all showed significant effort but there was something missing. All of the features looked great but something was simply still missing. It wasn't cost, professional photos or a lengthy description telling of all the effort put in. It was a build in which every part was modified to perfection and every detail carefully thought over in order to truly fulfill its theme. Here it is... in all of its beautiful customized glory the Verktøy Cu. Every part modified to complete the steampunk theme. From the power switch to the copper bars everything screams the theme steampunk. Every part carefully modified in order to show the world how a true custom workstation build should look. I thank you fine sir. You have given me something to truly please my eyes.

The only question I have is since you're using this machine as a render/edit orientated machine... why not have chosen to go with a pair of Quadro P5000s?

They'd have cost you about $800 less than Quad Titans, can still be water cooled as EK's Short Top 1080 blocks fit them, they would draw less than half the wattage, and with it being dual Xeons in a workstation class board you're apparently don't seem interested in doing AAA title gaming on this rig... Just curious, why you choose Titans is all.

  • 1 point

Do the IN-12 Nixie tubes function?? Awesome.

  • 2 points

Unfortunately they're Chinese QS30s, but they do work! They display water temps via an inline sensor.

  • 1 point

That's still awesome! What are you using to control them? Custom controller or bought?

  • 2 points

It's an old, limited edition fan controller from a company called Lamptron, the model # is FC10 if you want to look it up. It controls fan speeds for non-pwm fans (all fans are controlled by PWM via the motherboard in this build), displays current fan speeds (unfortunately also useless unless I do some fancy cabling but not really worth it), and so it only is doing its last function, which is displaying the temp of the temperature sensors I built into the loop.

I love copper tubing. Seeing these more and more inspires me to go this route for my next build, though, I may try to find some copper tubes that also have a sort of.. window? down opposite sides of the tube so that you can see the cool green coolant inside.

Gotta say, I'm not a fan of steampunk but this, this makes me feel like I should change my mind. I never thought I'd see a build that could look so good by making itself look so dirty. +{insert some arbitrary ordinal number like aleph null here} for the side panel window design

On a side note I see that you have the motherboard listed as a custom part when it is actually listed on this site alread, here's the link if you feel like updating it https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2frcCJ/asus-motherboard-z10ped8ws

  • 1 point

Honestly, probably not any better than an i7-7700K, even with the CPU bottlenecking the GPUs at that point. Xeons are definitely not optimized for gaming, so under 4K resolutions, there would be nowhere near a justifiable amount of performance gained to cost increase. But seeing as this is principally a rig built for editing and rendering, it'll do quite nicely.

Mmmmm I think it was 150mL of green concentrate 100mL of clear concentrate, and maybe 100mL of pastel yellow. Then like a gallon of distilled. It's all of EK's old coolant though that I've had sitting around for ages.

This is simply amazing. . . I was just scrolling through completed builds and I saw this and just had to check it out. That on/off switch was the best out of all of the build.

this is honestly one of the craziest builds on here, is there a reason you needed all this power?

Absolutely stunning. As a tradesman/craftsman who prides himself on perfection(well as close as one can get :)) and detail in my work, my unquenchable thirst for art and REAL craftsmanship in people's creations/work has been completely and thoroughly slaked. Very well done. I am impressed, and I promise you, not much impresses me. Amazing job. You should forever be proud of what you have made there. I would wager that there will maybe be a handful of PCs out there that are on the level of your creation. Impressive.

You know what is great about this build? It would be justified if the system happens to be loud, just imagine all the gears and steam running.

I agree with everyone else. This is the best build on the site by a long shot. Like seriously, you should be famous and a millionaire for making such a beautiful contraption.

Blown away man! Great job! I noticed the power cable, nice touch. Did you solder the end on? Looks like you may have had to do some splicing to get through all those copper pipes.
