Description

This was a build that my uncle asked me to do for him to replace his rig we built back in 2010. This rig is absolutely way over the top for him, heck a G3258 with 8GB RAM would suffice for him. He gave me a large budget and said build what you want. I had a lot of headaches building this, had to RMA one of the 980s, the Megahalems (yes I used it again, I absolutely love this cooler) came missing a set of fan clips, the SLI bridge didn't fit from Nvidia (which didn't match anyways) and the EVGA was impossible to find...I ended up using mine from Project-ARK. The grey sleeving wouldn't fit and I had to make wires out of scratch since I snipped some cables a little too short, and my 6 pin connectors from Corsair came all smashed up.

All in all, I still enjoyed building something with this much power. We were going to do a watercooled X99 build but DDR4 is way too expensive and I think he would benefit more from the nice single threaded performance of the 4790K due to it's stock 4GHz clock.

YESSSSSSSS. I <3 this. Great color coordination and pics. So much power! I'm totally looking up this CPU cooler that thing is dope.

Thanks man! Yeah I've used it in two of my builds so far! I love how it looks, and how easy it is to mount. It makes life easy, and it looks amazing. I might actually be using it once again in a near future build.

how's the performance of it? even if its comparable to a great, cheaper 212, the looks def win me over

At max load (stock clock) temps were about 70c-73c, sometimes mid 60s. So it's not bad, but it's no Noctua or Silver Arrow. But honestly, with air you can't expect a WHOLE lot of difference.

Yeah, agreed. I myself have an H105, but it's a pain to mess with and i'm not a serious overclocker, so I might look at the pretty heatsink solutions like this or the be quiet! rocks. So sexy. Even phanteks or noctua(with redux fans) would be pretty hawt in my rig.

Yeah I've used a few of the CLCs but I'm really just an air cooling guy. The Be Quiet ones are really nice too, I was thinking about using one of those for another build. The Cryorig R1 Ultimate is really nice looking too.

Holy ****! How did I miss that! Those Redux fans are sexy! Thanks for bringing those up! I'm gonna have to get me a pair of those. Do they hold a candle to their traditional fans?

Nice! I have the EVGA SuperNova 750 G2 and i thought about re-sleeving the cables to match my MSI Z97 mpower (Black and yellow). And by the way I was wondering if you could help me name the rig I am building? because I really like the cool names of the rigs you have built.

I would highly recommend you do re-sleeve it. The yellow/black scheme is so nice, dat contrast!

Sure! When I looked at your rig...yellow is a powerful color. The yellow is pretty aggressive looking. I thought of ZEUS, or Thunderbolt. Maybe even after the F-22 aircraft. RAPTOR. Stealthy (black) but very aggressive still.

I think I will go with Raptor or Thunderbolt. Thank you I just need to find out how they did the heat shrink wrap on the ends of the sleeving. Thank you very much.

You're welcome! Lutro0 Customs on YouTube have some excellent sleeving tutorials. I would check him out. Let me know if you need help with anything else!

Instead of Raptor I think you were thinking of the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_F-117_Nighthawk I will still credit you for the name though as I would have never thought of a name without your help.

Nope - I was thinking of the Raptor, it was designed to be stealthy and very difficult to detect. The airframe was designed and coated to reduce detection and visibility, but it's got some mean maneuverability.

I just think Raptor would fit better since you have a speedy 4790K in it :D But hey - pick what you like! I'm glad I helped you brainstorm. Good luck on your build and let me know when it's finished!

Is it an autobot or decepticon?

What if it's.....neither? o_O

Well, I'd like to assume it at least transforms into a cyber organic being

Jam packed full of goodies! Though kinda weird seeing gpu's vertical, where's the sag. What are the temps?

  • 1 point

I'm so used to using Silverstone's cases with vertical design that I cringe looking at horizontal designs...hehe Under AIDA64 stress test the first card averaged around 60-65c, the 2nd card about 55-60c (it also had the fan in the back helping it out).

CPU was about 70-73c after we updated the BIOS. The old BIOS was pumping way too much juice (1.39V) and it kept throttling and hitting 90C.

Don't know why this is still at 20 likes, but if it helps you play hours of minesweeper, it's a +1. I'M JOKING, this build is awesome.

What exactly will your uncle be using this for? It turned out great!

  • 1 point

Thank you! Haha this soooooooooooooooooooo overkill for him, he games lightly and browses. As stated in my desc, he could do with a G3258 and 8GB RAM. Although it may be used a fair amount when he plays FC4 and Witcher 3 when that comes out.

Light gaming and browsing lol, that's one lucky uncle! At least it will be able to handle Witcher 3, I haven't looked at system requirements yet but I'm sure they're demanding. What monitor does he have?

  • 1 point

Well, he's the one who paid for it! I just got to build it hehe. He's got three 1080p monitors, one of them is 144hz. Yeah, those cards will never see max usage in their lifetime :(

But at least the build will last him forever lol

How did you take those awesome pictures? And what did you take them on?

  • 1 point

I took them on my Nikon D3100 in my living room at night. It gives it a show case feel with the wooden floor, and at night time I don't have to worry about picking a background.

So you just used the camera flash to do the lighting?

  • 2 points

Oh no! I did a technique called light painting. I did a long exposure (maybe 15 seconds each? that's with the computer lighting off, with the PC lighting on maybe 5-3 seconds) and I would literally paint the computer with a diffused LED light until the shutter closed again.
