Description

This is my first PC build ever. I come over from using a console my entire life and I must say........why in the world did it take so long for me to ascend? Haha

It was a very difficult time for me to decide between Intel or AMD. Each have their own benefits and disadvantages. I ultimately went with AMD and the Ryzen lineup because it has a lower entry cost point, "affordable" hardware (stupid DDR4 prices), and I am more akin to the "underdog" competition. I realize the red and black theme has been quite popular, but I am very happy I went with it. I am using this build for content creation, streaming, and light gaming. The games I will most likely play are Fortnite, Doom, and some other AAA titles in the future.

Part Reviews

CPU

This CPU is an unreal steal. Does everything you want, and then some. If you need a solid CPU to do gaming, content creation, multi-threaded work, and on a budget...you need to grab this.

CPU Cooler

Does what it is intended for. Keeps my OC'd Ryzen 5 1600x idle at 30c and was an easy install.

Motherboard

Easy to work with. Bios was easy to understand and made me comfortable in overclocking my CPU. It also fit with my theme so that was a nice plus.

Memory

5 stars for the look and compatibility with my mobo. Easily able to get this memory to run at 3200mhz with an update to the mobo bios.

FWIW, please make sure you look into your motherboards qvl list before buying memory and making sure it is compatible with your mobo. Almost didn't buy these because of bad information I found online.

1 star for the price. I understand this is the way the market is, but it just sucks pricing is this outrageous.

Storage

cheap memory for booting up pc.

Storage

Good price for my gaming needs. Easy to install.

Video Card

When I committed to an AMD processor, I was leaning towards an NVIDIA GPU. However when the time came to purchase my GPU, prices were ridiculous for both AMD and NVIDIA. The 1060 6 gb was around $300+. A RX 580....good luck finding a "deal" on that. I randomly found this on PCPP and instantly purchased. It has a solid looking backplate and only needs a single 8-pin connector. Runs Fortnite at 100+ frames at high settings. Plus...Freesync monitor in the future.

Case

What a steal this is at around $60. It has tempered glass, an RGB light that can cycle through various colors, a power supply shroud, and nice cutouts for your cables to go through. As a first time builder it was very easy to build into, and has great cable management with Velcro staps already attached. Only problem I had, was with the clearance at the bottom of the case. I had to remove the Phanteks CPU extension I had purchased to make room for the side panel to go back into place.

Also, if you don't pre-route cables before hand, the motherboard can get in the way of one of the cutouts at the top. The room you have to put your cables in and out of the way, is limited. I had to go in and do some remodeling before I could close it up.

Other than that small complaint, it's a great budget case that checks all the boxes.

Power Supply

Fully modular PSU, easy to install, enough power to run my PC. Great buy for a budget build.

Operating System

Windows 10....moving on.

Case Fan

This fan pushes a lot of air out of my case. I hardly notice that it is on. I will be picking up another one to replace the one that came with my case.

Monitor

Beautiful montior. Got it on Craigslist, if you have a chance to get one of these. DO IT!

Keyboard

Love the clicky noise I get from this keyboard haha. The customization you get on this board is awesome.

Mouse

Comfortable feel in my hand. Customization for RGB is a nice touch, but it's the way you can add weight to this mouse that sold me on it. Very responsive and the extra buttons on it just adds more to the customization experience. Great buy.

Headphones

Fits my big head and does not feel too pressured on my ears. The cushioned ear cups makes in-game experience great...not so much for IRL when my wife wants to talk haha

Custom

Flexible extensions, easy to use. Adds that extra pop to my build that makes it that much sweeter.

3.8 @ 1.344v...I've seen other users get to 4.0 but this is my 1st build so I'm not quite comfortable pushing it that high...yet

Excellent first time build. It makes my first build look like a cobble job.

Thank you for the comment! I took a lot of time and effort to make sure every part was right. Can't wait to build another one!

Awesome part choice, awesome build. My ocd said to tighten the gpu cable up a bit.

Haha I know what you mean. But with the extensions and limited space I could fit into my case, I had to have some slack for that cable. I even had to take out my cpu extension cable so I could close the back panel.

Awesome looking build! What is your opinion on this GPU? I'm considering buying it but there isn't too much info on this particular model. Specifically I wanted to ask about noise. Are the fans loud?

Honestly, I can't hear the fans since I have headphones on or I'm using my computer speakers. As you can see from the pics, I'm pretty close to my rig.

Sorry I can't really give you more of a definitive answer.

Why use DVI-D?

May I inquire to if that powercolor red dragon is actually black on the outside? It looks plain and drab and I thought it was a little red?

It is black. However, if you're going to vertically mount your gpu, then you would see that red dragon on the fan side. But it's black all the way around. Sorry about the late reply.

No problem. And that’s for the info.

It's running great. I don't have any complaints with it. I recently added another monitor to my setup, about 4 months ago, and haven't noticed any hitching when I'm playing.
