Description

Update 3/16/17 Added a couple of pictures of my completed battle station. Added 2 platforms for the statues behind the monitors. My side is the Hulk vs Wolverine and my wife's side is the Dark Phoenix.

Update 3/12/17 I have setup and installed the theater seats. The wife and I built the platform for the back row. The seats are great! Very comfortable, power recline, led, usb ports, arm rest storage, tray tables. I am very happy with how everything turned out. I added update pictures. Thank you for looking!

Update 3/2/17: Firstly, I wanted to thank everyone for the comments and feedback, I hope all enjoyed. Secondly, Thank to PCPP for the featured spot!

I finally made a decision on theater seating and have placed my order. I'm going with 2 rows of 4. Front row with center loveseat and back row will be standard. I went with the Seatcraft Venecians. I will add updated pictures when they come in 1 week from today.

This game room has been a vision of mine for a while. I felt it would be best showcased with the focus on the room and the multiple gaming builds inside. I will give a brief description of each build and their purpose.

Media Setup:

GLaDOS

Coolteck W2 case containing:

Z170-Deluxe

I7-6700K

1080 FTW Hybrid SLI

32GB Ram

850 Pro SSD OS drive plus others

This rig is hooked up to my 65” LG OLED TV. I use it for 4k gaming when I am in the mood to play laid back with a controller. I prefer to use the Xbox one elite controller when I game in this area.

I am “pc master race” all the way, but many of my friends game on consoles; it is for this reason, as well as for exclusives, that I have the PS4. The Xbox One S is primary used for UHD blu-ray playback. I bought the Samsung soundbar to compliment the astounding picture the OLED provides. The sound bar with Dolby Atmos is amazing and can change how you experience movies.

Dual Gaming Setup:

Wheatley

Corsair Air 240 case containing:

Maximus VIII Gene

I7-6700K

Titan X Hybrid (Maxwell) SLI

16GB Ram

950 Pro SSD M.2 OS Drive plus others

ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q 34” 3440x1440 100Hz Monitor

Chell

Corsair Air 240 case containing:

Maximus VIII Gene

I5-6600K

980TI Hybrid SLI

16GB Ram

850 Pro SSD OS Drive plus others

Samsung S34E790C 34” 3440x1440 60Hz Monitor

My wife and I are both gamers, and we enjoy gaming together. We built this dual PC desk so that when we played we could do so together. Wheatley also runs the HTC Vive VR headset. Although VR isn’t really “taking off” we have really enjoyed the Vive with games like Space Pirate Trainer, Fruit Ninja, The Lab, and because of the awesome mod “Revive”, Superhot VR.

WorkStation:

Mac Pro

Xeon E5 Quad Core

Dual D700s

64GB ECC Ram

Samsung U28D590D UHD 60Hz Monitor

This is my work setup. I prefer OSX for productivity. I use a program called “Duet Display” to use my iPad Pro as a second monitor. When not being used as I monitor I use the iPad Pro for art and reading comic books.

These setups are receiving WIFI from the Nighthawk X10. This router is very strong and works well with my setups.

My media room is still a work in progress. I hope to build a different desk for my workstation, move the futon to the loft, and put 2 rows of theater seats in front of the OLED TV. I would also like to remove the shelving and put floating shelves in various places to display items I’ve collected.

Thanks for looking; I hope you’ve enjoyed Stone House Studio.

Special thanks to my brother, eli_harper13 for pushing me to post this, adding most of the parts, and taking/editing the pictures.

Thanks man! The house was originally built in 1974. It has been heavily renovated many times from what I've been told. The plumbing and electrical was a nightmare. lol. The studio, I was told, was added on in 2005. My truck is a 2011 GMC sierra 4x4, 6" suspension with 1.25" body. I love my truck, never gives me any trouble.

Thank you! I might would consider a projector setup, but for now, I'm in love with the OLED.

  • 1 point

You must get a projector sir. The experience is sooo much more immersive. Believe me I am speaking from experience. Have a home projector and you cannot compare an LED even if it is OLED to the immersion provided by a good projector setup.

  • 1 point

Thanks for your suggestion. What do you have/recommend?

  • 2 points

I feel terrible for replying so late... I must have somehow missed the notification that you had responded to my comment. We are using 2 Optoma 141x 1080p Projectors, one at home for movies/games and the other for game development and PC class. They are great budget 1080p projectors. The thing about projectors is they can become expensive really quickly if you want better and better. I would suggest not spending more than $1000 to get started to see if it works for you.

I was limo driver until the girl of my dreams flew to Aspen and out of my life. She left her briefcase in the airport so my friend and I decided to return it to her. We started our journey across the country to bring Miss Samsonite her briefcase. I knew that when we found her she would invite us in for tea and strumpets! Long story short there was a lot of money in the briefcase, we spent most of it but returned the briefcase with "IOUs". She was married and we had to walk back home.

The trip would have been a lot easier if you wouldn't have driven 1/6 of the way across the country, in the wrong direction! But you totally redeemed yourself when you showed up on that scooter you traded my shaggin wagon for.

I manage small offices for inspection companies. I actually don't make that much money. I worked 2-3 jobs in college, when I graduated, I had a small amount of school debt and my truck. I bought an RV and lived in it while working in various states. I paid off the truck and RV and started saving as much as I could. I don't go out, smoke or drink. I just manage money well.

I manage offices for inspection companies. It's a great job but the drawback is I am gone most of the time. For example: I am currently in a remote area of west Texas, living in a RV with my pregnant wife and will be here until October. I don't plan on doing this much longer. Now that I have a home I don't want to be gone 90% of the time, but, for now, sacrifices must be made.

  • 2 points

Thanks! For now the loft is holding boxes for a lot of these parts. lol. BUT, the plan is to get 2 rows of theater seats in front of the OLED and move the futon to the loft and make it a small area to chill out. Maybe put some comics up there, the 3ds, im still working out the details.

Why do you need a titan x and so much pc's

  • 1 point

Well, I don't need any of it, but the purpose of each pc I talked about some in the description. I also work out of state often and bring one for my RV and one for my work office (keep that quiet) lol. As for the Titan Xs: the first real gaming PC I built, I wanted to play 4k60 and I was reading some games were utilizing 8gb of vram when doing so. I think one was Shadow of Mordor with the hi-res texture pack. I wanted to make sure I had the best chance of hitting that goal. However, I ended up building multiple computers and moving parts around. So, now my 4k60 machine has 1080s, and my 1440p ultrawide has the Titan Xs as overkill. Thanks for looking!

You've must have spent so much time on this **** xD +rep

  • 2 points

Yes! Countless hours, sometimes very frustrating. I just moved here and we unloaded everything we owned into this building to keep the house from getting cluttered (there was a lot of renovating to do). I had to prioritize building closets and plumbing over my vision of the game room. Once I was done with the house stuff, it was every night until 3am working on the game room.

Beautiful setup my friend.

  • 2 points

Thanks! I got it for my wife. She's a big Dark Phoenix fan (redhead power and such). lol. I got it from sideshowtoy.com. I want to build a small platform behind our dual gaming setup with a statue on each side, but I can't decide what statue I want.

  • 1 point

Agree on this but its seems to be this trend of all in one sound bars. Which has 10 to 12 speakers in the bar and it reflect the sound around the room to simulate surround sound.

But yes nothing beats actual full range speaker setups.

May seems like an odd question but, which to you prefer between the Razer Orbweaver and the Tartarus? And why did you pick those two / do you like using them? I'm currently looking to buy one of those things but I can't decide on which to pick. I was also considering the Logitech G13.

Anyway, nothing surprising about that, but woow this room is awesome! xD Honestly that's amazing, good job.

  • 2 points

I like the feel of the Orbweaver best. It has mechanical keys. I got the Tartarus because I saw it on clearance at Walmart and I wanted something to match with my dual setup. It is not mechanical so thats a con, but I do like 3 rows of keys instead of 4 like the Orbweaver for simple gaming. If you are more about the MMORPGs then that 4th row would be important. As for comparing to the logitech or any other brand I can't help (I haven't researched it). The Orbweaver was a gift from my wife because when I work out of state we live in an RV and I have to game from a recliner. A full sized keyboard didn't work well, and I was trying to play Black Mesa and Half-Life 2. The gamepad made it much nicer to play. Glad you like you room! Thanks!

I can't tell you how much I envy you... oh wait the fact that there's a puddle under my desk says it all!

  • 1 point

You sure don't have kids ;) Joke apart, 4k is great but you could play in lightboost mode for zero motion blur and ultimate fluidity with your rig. You need constant 120 fps for that. more info here:

http://www.blurbusters.com/zero-motion-blur/lightboost/

i can't stand motion blur, tearing and stuttering so 1080 lightboost is a way better experience/immersion than 30-60 fps 4k.

Great work on that gamer ultimate house (and keep that gamer wife close, it's a gift from heaven :))

how fast is you internet there where u live lol must be slow

It was really slow. The best I could get was 6Mbps through ATT. I fought with and proceeded to stalk Charter until they agreed to service my area. Now I get 72Mbps with the option of 120Mbps. So not super fast but plenty for what I do.

Nice house!

  • 1 point

love the build

  • 1 point

Stunning, amazing work. I just want to know one thing, what does your upgrade cycle look like :)? With everything being more or less "current" what are your thoughts on keeping the technology fresh? I ask because as someone who tends to do incremental refreshes every 1-2 years it makes my head (and wallet) hurt thinking about trying to keep all of that stuff up to snuff.

  • 2 points

Well, keeping current only interest me if the technology convinces me thats it offers something of value. Ex. I couldn't do 4k60 on most AAA titles with 980ti sli, so when the 1080s came out it was an attractive upgrade (I actually waited until CES2017 was over to make sure they didn't announce a 1080ti). What I look forward to in the future is improvements in VR or AR. I love my VIVE but its definitely a first gen product (screen door effect, lower resolution, wired tracking, lacking in game selection) but I can see the potential. Thanks for looking!

  • 1 point

lol. I bet ur annoyed that the 1080 ti's are out now.

  • 1 point

Very. lol

  • 1 point

Oh and with this setup I would like to see some sort of battery backup, maybe an office grade UPS with a cut over to generator power for extended outages, especially given your location.

  • 2 points

You are reading my mind. I have added 1 UPS on my workstation since posting. And have 2 more ordered. I have spoken with my electrician about the home generator and it will certainly be a future investment. I just need to save a few more nickels first. lol

  • 1 point

Eh, at this point I would just use the workstation UPS as a stopgap solution and work toward a solution that would give you short term battery power for the entire building wired to a generator. No need to clutter up such a nice space with un-necessary UPS hardware. Just stick the UPS and generator off the back and then you can wait out any inclement weather.

I guess the psu stores enough power for them to light up when the unit is moved. Normally when plugged in they only light up for about 2 seconds when the unit is moved slightly. Otherwise they are off. To get the pic I moved he unit and moved my hand out of the picture really fast. lol. It took like 4 tries to get the picture.

As many as I can get. :-) If I supply the PCs, then I would say about 6. But some of my friends bring their own.

  • 1 point

Mate, get a projector. That screen is tiny.

  • 1 point

It looks smaller than it is with the way the picture is shot but the seats are so close that it still makes for a nice experience. I wanted the quality the oled had to offer. I really think any bigger would make the first row too close. But idk maybe in the future I'll test out a projector there.

  • 1 point

What is it like sitting on the second row? Does the screen look kinda small? Also which pc, keyboard and mouse controls the screen, is it one of the pcs at the back of the room or do you use wireless keyboard and mouse?

  • 1 point

Hey! Sitting in the second row is actually where most would prefer. The room is relatively small and the seats are very close to the TV. The way the picture is taken makes the TV look much smaller and further than it really is. The first row is about 4ft away from the TV (I prefer to sit close, especially when gaming) and the second row is about 8ft. It doesn't look small, but a little bigger would've been better. (I couldn't fit bigger with the oled tv since they go from 65" to 85" and the windows are there. Not to mention the 85" was $20K at the time!) GlaDOS is the pc hooked to the TV. It is my most powerful pc and provides the best 4k experience. I use the LG K830 as the wireless keyboard with trackpad and play only games that have controller support on the TV.

And, also what was the best thing about building this dream man gamer cave?

  • 1 point

I worked out of state, living in a small RV for a few years and I wanted something I could escape to.

I didn't buy it all at once. I built and upgraded the computers over time. When you're living in an RV working over 60hrs a week every week for years you have little bills and little time to spend money on parting and such.

The best thing for me is at night, when my 10 month old is asleep in the house, my wife and I can watch movies, or play games without having to worry about waking the baby.

*I have been making some small changes lately and maybe around Spring I will be upgrading all PCs and I will update this build with all the changes.

Company I work for rents my trashcan for $10 a day for the past 3 years. They've given me about $10,950 to bring it on jobs with me. I own it, I am the only one who uses it and they pay me rent for it. I bet you would do the same, right?

  • 1 point

You pay for "Apple" and everything that comes with it. I see where you're coming from but then I also love Apple and their software. I own a 27 inch iMac and I have it set up right next to my windows rig. The windows rig obviously has more use out of it, but when I want to watch some TV, edit some videos, listen to music, or even use it to text my friends from my computer rather than finding my phone it is nice. I got it a while ago when they released snow leopard and I still have no problems with it. I guess it's up to the user in the end.

  • 0 points

you literally included all electronics in your house. that's not what pcpp is about. a ps4 is not a pc or part of a pc but that may be ok but an ipad in the price is just stupid. and most stupidly you included a mac book bag... A FREAKING MACBOOK BAG

  • 1 point

Man you are upset. I really thought pcpp was about sharing builds and setups. Yeah there are some additions that may not be beneficial to any (like the ipad) but other than sharing, it helped me see a list of what was in there and how much i've spent. The bag is actually a desktop mac bag made by what was then a small company that gave me a great product and customer service and I'm glad I listed it. My builds engaged others in fun conversations, some debates, and an all around socializing of electronic related subjects. It's been fun

  • 1 point

I apologize. you worked so hard to build something like this. The truth is Im just jealous lol.

  • 1 point

It is about sharing your builds and stuff, ipadguy1360 needs to learn that it is about your build, your setup and whatever you want to include, Philip will tell you if there is something wrong with how you do things. So as far as i am concerned, if you are doing a build for a computer and want to add the cost of the drywall for the computer room, so be it. My concept is if it is part of the room for your computer, than it can all be part of the cost. I would only take issue if you decided you list the cost of your car in the build, or like the remodel of the main house.

  • 4 points

You obviously didn't read the description. This room was built with my wife and friends in mind. The house that was with it is the house my wife found and fell in love with. She is well taken care of. We live a happy, fulfilling life. I'm sorry that you have issues that cause you to insult someone else's ideas, creation and family priorities. I truly hope you find your own version of fulfillment.
