Description

Updated older haswell system with coffee lake. Re-used haswell for another build.

I've slowly been amassing storage devices over the years. The define R6 fits all of them with room for ample airflow. The chassis also offers a huge height for cpu coolers. Let me fit my front fan on the NH-D15 even with some ram clearance issues. The fan controller is great (set a curve w/ mobo). Overall, I really enjoyed building in the chassis. The HDD panel, power supply basement, and cable management lend to a really clean build. Added some RGB strips for some internal lighting to highlight the components as the black interior and tinted glass are pretty dark on their own.

Picked up the 8600k from a friend for cheap, and the Extreme 4 board is a steal for the features when it is on discount.

4.9GHz overclock at 1.3V.

Noctua fans are carried over from previous build. Everything matches with black right? Even beige and brown.

GTX 970 will be updated whenever the next round of gpus launch.

Having a top fan intake with a another top fan as exhaust is not a optimal setup. The intake fan creates a area of low pressure above it, and the outtake fan creates a area of high pressure above it. The air coming out of top outtake fan will just circle straight into the top intake fan, which means you'll be feeding your air cooler with already warmed air. I would suggest removing the top intake fan completely as it's superfluous.

I was concerned about that when installing it. I'm planning on running some tests to see if it has any impact. The idea was to directly supply the CPU cooler with air, but if it is just recycling warm air, then that won't help.

As a followup, ran some stress tests with only a 1C difference on a single core between the fan as intake and the fan turned off. Ultimately, the fan is superfluous for the airflow of the rig, but it also doesn't seem to add any negative aspects. I'm sure if the pc was in a more confined space, the re-circulation of warm air would have a larger impact.

ack, too many! I know theyre great at cooling and generally quiet, but godamn ar they ugly. I picked two Fractal HFs and two HPs to go in my Define R6, they stay pretty quiet and move massive amounts of air. OP, how are temps in this? I'd imagine if the ambient temp of the room isn't high, temps must be amazing

Otherwise cool build! We have similar taste in brands/components. Is your 8600k delidded? I'm running an 8700k with a Noctua cooler, currently at 4.8 GHz @ 1.25v. I was debating going for 4.9 @ 1.3 as you did, but temps under a full Aida64/Prime95 load already peak in the high 70s. Not sure how much headroom I have without a delid.

It's not delidded, but doing so is tempting. I'm hitting 67-70 max temp on my cores with prime95 (non avx).

Nice, yeah I'm getting similar numbers non-AVX, which is like 99% of any realistic workloads. Are you using an AVX offset? I was trying to avoid it for a true 4.8 OC but I think I may have to set it to -2 or so if I push any further.

-2 on the avx offset. I haven't worried much about avx. Intel burn test gave decent enough temps with the avx offset.
