Update: This is now my family's HTPC as this build was not being used much until we got a new TV, when we brought this upstairs.

I'm 14 years old, I tried my best to keep cables out of the way.

Originally, I planned to build it, then sell it on cragslist as a basic PC, but then, after a while my grandpa came to me and told me to make it my mom's PC. She had been running a Vista machine for 8 years and I knew it was time for an upgrade for a long time, and the time had finally come to 'upgrade' to this machine. Her old machine consisted of a Core 2 Duo running at 1.86GHz (slower clock speed, I know, but I didn't have the ability to get at least a 5350 for her), 4GB DDR2 RAM, and a verrrry slooooooooow 200GB (I think) hard drive.

This system will work perfectly for her since she won't be using it that often and she doesn't do very large tasks.

This took 2 1/2 months to build. Why, you ask? I'll tell you. I ordered everything (except the hard drive and OS) from Newegg, which all came in 3 days. The hard drive I ordered from Amazon, and that didn't come for two weeks. Before the hard drive came, I installed everything (or tried to) and when I was putting the CPU in the motherboard, I found it had bent pins (oh no!) and I didn't want to try to bend them back, so I sent it back to Newegg (which took FOREVER, 3 weeks) and when I got that installed, I waited, and waited, and waited for a buyer from craigslist but no one wanted it :( Then when Windows 10 was released, that's when my grandpa told me to get her Windows 10 on that machine. But more trouble: after I got installation media for it, I tried to partition the drive and (not having ever partitioned before) waited for only about 1 minute, then restarted it, finding failed partitions on the drive after it booted back up. I tried to erase the drive with DBAN and I tried to boot the system up again and NO HARD DRIVE WAS DETECTED. So, we sent for another hard drive, and got it the day before I posted this. After my try with partitioning, I didn't dare try to do it again. It worked perfectly and Windows 10 was installed and now this PC is ready for my mom to use!

Now I know that I probably could have tried to partition it, but I didn't want to ruin another drive.

This PC will also be used for some games since my sisters will probably be playing Minecraft on it from time to time, so I tried playing Minecraft (tuned down somewhat), and it works perfectly fine (~50FPS with render turned to 8 chunks, no clouds, no particles, etc)

My mom had a 20" dell monitor that she used on that 8 year old pc (it's a widescreen, calm down) and my grandpa gave me his so called "old" keyboard and mouse set that he got when he bought his computer in 2011 (he got a new keyboard/mouse set).

Boot time is actually 9 seconds! I'm shocked since there is no SSD in there....

If you really were this interested in the build, I'm also shocked since this was such a cheapo pc and my second build. I can't post the first on pcpp because I sold it without taking pics. Oh well!

Load temps taken from CPU-Z stress test/SpeedFan temp readings.

Now let's see who gets the first comment, jipster or someone else......

Part Reviews

Does the job, and when watching 1080p video it's ok, but never try to hook this up to a system where you watch videos in 1440p.

I don't know if this is because of the chipset, but there are only 2 fan headers, one for the CPU cooler, and the other for a single system fan. Most people have more than 2 fans in their builds. Luckily one of the fans had a molex connector so I was fine.

Again, does what it's supposed to. Don't try to partition on this drive unless you really know it works, cause I had some issues with that.

I really like the look of this case, only there is not any cable management in this case, don't plan to get this one if you want to put anything in a 5.25" bay... that's the only way put cables somewhere if you have a non-modular PSU.

Power Supply

It'll do the job, just don't put it in a gaming rig or anything related to powerful.

Operating System

Love the boot times, don't love the privacy issues. Make sure you don't set it up with the "recommended" settings because no one but Microsoft recommends it (well, maybe people who want your information.

Truthfully....its amazing to see you make a good machine at such a competitive budget. +1

Thanks! I really should have gotten a 5350 since it wasn't that much more. Probably wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway.

Skylord 2 points 43 months ago

Pretty nice build-especially for the price!

Claxbie 1 point 40 months ago

Could have used a smaller power supply I have the Intel 4790k and a Geforce GTX 980 graphics card plus everything else and still only use a max of 380W all on a 750W power supply :P

How did you install windows 10 without an optical drive?

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

Microsoft redistributed a Windows 10 media creation tool that I saved in my cloud, and I've been using it to create Windows 10 media to put on my flash drive to install on computers.

Nicrocks1999 1 point 40 months ago

How would I do this and could I put in on a flash off of a mac? And so now do I even need the disc?

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

Technically, you don't need the CD, it contains install media for Windows 10, however, you do need the product key. If you PM me I will send you an ISO. Read this article to flash it to your USB drive. Do note that it takes at least 3GB of space on the flash drive and you DO have to format the flash drive in order to do it.

Nicrocks1999 1 point 40 months ago

Can I download it off of microsoft I know where the iso is

joeyruan 1 point 35 months ago

How could I do it? I have a brand new computer, but I have a Windows 10 laptop and lots of flash drive space.

Nice job. Taking care of mom. +1

Good build but too expensive, this would've been enough

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

This was only my second build, I had lots to learn still (I had only done 1 budget computer, around the same price), and that PSU/case combo is worse than what I have, ESPECIALLY the PSU. The CX series (or an OEM Seasonic/ EVGA 80+) is perfect for these insanely cheap rigs, and this one is modular to clean up cables, hence the reason I chose it.

DouvleX 1 point 37 months ago

K here http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/pHx2pg Also you could've went with cheaper PSU, RAM, and case. My point is is that you spent too much on some components for no reason.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Right, I know I did. However, with current pricing, deals, and knowledge that I have gained, this is the absolute minimum I would have spent to retain quality and similarity but not spend as much as I did. In fact, I no longer suggest AM1 as a socket since it is pretty much dead.

DouvleX 1 point 37 months ago

Oh ok, nonetheless I still 1+ because of parent build.

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Thanks. :)

woahwoahwilly 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Again with the crappy power supply?

woahwoahwilly 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Tell me why you would recommend a case with a power supply that's pretty much a ticking time bomb.

woahwoahwilly 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Dat cable management...

woahwoahwilly 2 Builds 1 point 5 months ago

Hey, I used that same case in a build of mine!

BlueDaGun -1 points 43 months ago

Nice! One thing though... wouldnt it be better to buy a prebuilt? Its just plain better value at this price range if you do find one 0_0

IwannaPC submitter 11 Builds 3 points 43 months ago

I just wanted to build it. I would otherwise think I betrayed myself if I didn't build it and I had the ability to.

" I just wanted to build it. I would otherwise think I betrayed myself if I didn't build it and I had the ability to." Best comment ever. I absolutely love that spirit, keep building friend.
