Description

This build is my return to PC's after 6 years of Apple. Still keeping my MacBook but this will be my everyday gaming and video editing PC.

This is my first try at putting together something like this and of course I could not have done it without the PCP Community and all of the great builds here.

It took a while to buy the parts because I bought mostly everything either on Sale some kind of Deal or points from my credit card, as you will see the prices show how much i paid for each item. I am sure some of you might think that two Gtx1080's are overkill but managed to buy them from Best Buy for the price of Gtx1070's.

The build in the NZXT S340 Elite was super easy, love the layout of the case and cable management is a breeze. The Maximus VIII Hero Alpha is a great motherboard, with RGB headers to light the whole case up. The RGB lights are from Cablemod as well as the custom power cables for the motherboard GPU's and CPU. Could not list those in the part list.

The CPU is running on a rock solid 4.6GHz. The GPU's are running on an average of 2000MHz with a 120% power target, a +200MHz GPU Clock Offset and +500MHz Memory Clock Offset and of course a more aggressive fan curve to keep them around 70-75C

My main goal was to keep everything clean and simple while having it future proof as well.

Would love to hear your thoughts or if I can improve on anything!

Wow, love everything about it. Where'd you manage to find 1080's for $475?

  • 6 points

Best Buy had a special or an error more likely a couple of weeks ago, they listed 1080's with the price of 1070's, both on eBay and online. Got sent the 1070's and exchanged them in store for 1080's because they messed up.

Having killed cells in SSDs from using SLI GPUs in the S340 with SSDs placed directly under the two hot GPUs, I'd highly, highly, highly recommend moving your SSD to one of your drive cages so you don't lose important data :)

They're blowers air gets sucked in the fan and air comes out the back.

  • 1 point

The GPUs are still right there, getting up to 80C +. Having killed my own SSD (or at least mostly killed, could still read from it in the end) from doing this I'd recommend the same to OP.

Are the build in Fans as loud as people say? Did you replace them?

  • 2 points

The case fans you mean? They were dead silent, i did not like the dull black look. Wanted something a bit better and wanted the white accent ring on the corsair fans. To add a bit of white along with the cables.

  • 0 points

Do you think they provide enough air flow or would I have to add some extra? Thanks for the answer

  • 2 points

The case comes with two 120 fans. They should provide enough airflow but i would definetly reccommend changing the top one to a 140 because the cut out is for a 140. Dont know why they cheap out on a fan... i have the Kraken fans and the Psu puling air in because they both have a dust screen so no dust can come in. And the two case fans are set to exhaust. Super silent and effective

/salute Very nicely done my friend.

SLI makes me cringe when i think about the top gpu 3 fans blowing heat down onto the bottom gpu. Good choice on FEs. Did you consider water loop? Do you see any need for water loop now haven experienced FEs?

  • 2 points

I was worried about that when I built my rig with Dual 1080's. I have 80 mm spacing between the two and the top one runs about 10 degrees hotter under load with a mild overclock. I've never seen either GPU hit higher than 65 even playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on ultra at 144Mhz

  • 1 point

No need for water loop right now. FE's blow out most of the heat at the back. Cpu temp is more than adequate, the Kraken x62 is a beast. The temps inside the case are low.

  • 1 point

Would you even be able to attempt a custom loop in the S340?

  • 1 point

It would be too tight to make it look nice, but it is beyond my capabilities, never done anything like that. I am sure somebody more experienced has done it or would be able to do it.

  • 1 point

Yeah, I think you could do it.

Maybe remove the hard drive bays, cut out a circle, put the pump in the basement, then have the reservoir in front of the cable management bar thing (so the pump doesn't interfere with the GPU clearance too much). Get some of those really thin Black Ice radiators, put a 280mm in the front and then cut out extra grills on the top and put up a 280mm on the top as well and cover over it with a dust filter and maybe add stuff around it to make it look like it was supposed to be there.

It sounds crazy, but it might work! ...Might wanna take everything out and do a test fit before you start drilling, though.

  • 1 point

I like it. Great price on the 1080's. I've always felt the two places you can't have overkill are GPU and CPU. I know many disagree but so what. A few more FPS is still a few more FPS.

How did you not get arrested for the theft of those 1080's?

How did you find your NZXT Kraken X62 ? is it worth 160$ ? and do u think it will be good to use with upcoming motherboards with new intel cpus such as ice and tiger lake in 2018 and 2019 ?

  • 1 point

Newegg.com has them in stock. Pre ordered from nzxt but was not shipping till the end of December. When i saw that newegg has it just ordered it and cancelled my order with nzxt. Probably a bit overpriced but looks amazing and performance is stellar. Should get discounted within a few months

  • 1 point

Darn! You took this name before I could use it. I'll have to think of something else...

Jokes aside, this is an amazing build and I'm super jealous of the price of those 1080's (and the name)! Cable management is well done so overall great job!

  • 1 point

Thank you! Sorry for taking the name. Wanted to name it black and white. I was playing around with the RGB led's and fell in love with this light blue. I think it complements it.

Hey, that's pretty good!

Love the look of the X62 in every build, I still can't justify paying that much for aesthetics myself. Great deal on the 1080s, seems like a really balanced build that'll perform very well for you.

Wow a couple of clichés come to mind. Go big or go home. Come out swinging. If you want something done right do it yourself. And so on and so on. I could only wish that my first build or even current builds would match this.

Wow 285$ for 6700k, 475$ for gtx 1080's, dominator plats for 99$ Rm750i for 75$ and counting, teach me lol.. you really got all those parts for dirt cheap, here in holland it would cost me nearly double that amount lol even on sale

  • 1 point

Is there even space between the tubeoutlet of the x62 and the Corsair Dominators ?

Because on my Mainboard (ASUS Maximus VIII Hero) and the X52 it seems to stand over a little bit.

It's pretty close. I think its touching the first ram stick, temps seem to be low though at the point they touch.

  • 1 point

how's the 1080s doing? what fps do you get on 1440p? are the FE good enough?

  • 1 point

The FE's are not the best 1080's but love the fact that they exhaust all the heat out the back, keeping temps inside great. With a custom fan curve and an overclock as I mentioned above they are running at around 2000MHz. Playing Witcher 3 right now in 4K almost everything maxed out running at 60-80 FPS. So I am happy overall.

Hi, Is it easy for a newbie like me to put all this together ? I don't even know how to setup the operating system. etc.. Thank you

  • 1 point

Well it depends on how much of a newbie you are. If you have never installed an OS, than you might need some help from a friend that has some experience. The build was straightforward but I spent countless nights watching youtube build videos and tutorials before diving in. This site also offers great help in putting the parts list together and making sure they will all work together. Let me know if I can help with any other advice

Thank you very much. I will definitely be reading and watching more videos before buying the parts.

  • 1 point

Hey! I absolutely love this color scheme. How did you get the aesthetic neon look? I'm currently building an SLI Asus Strix 1080 build, but unlike FE cards it doesn't redirect hot air. Is there room for an 80mm fan on the right side of the gpu cards to help with cooling? If you recommend the FE cards because of cooling, I might sacrifice the extra power and get FE 1080s. How does that SLI bridge work? And is there room to lower the second gpu any? Thanks!

  • 1 point

Thank you first of all. To answer your questions in order: I have plugged in Cablemod led strips to the motherboard rgb headers and just played around with the colors. FE cards would not have been my first choice but that crazy deal I found made me love them, they are not the best performers out there but love the rear exhaust, small size and low power consumption. The case temps stay nice and cool. The strix cards are huuuge. You will not be able to fit a fan in this case to do a push-pull because of the cable management bar. The SLI bridge works great so far. My first time playing around with sli, but seems to work fine for the most part. Of course not all games support it. Would not lower the second gpu because it needs to breathe through the bottom and I think the spacing is just perfect like this.

  • 1 point

Ah thanks, I might get a bigger case for the strix cards then because I want to use fan cooling push/pull between them. I did like the fan setup in this case however, I might see if I can whiddle my way around it somehow, maybe by getting different cards. Thanks a ton! Love the build!

Did you have any problems with dominators placing the Radiator on top?

Nothing noticeable, i wish there was a bit more clearance so they don't touch but the ram usually gets warmer than the cooler tubing. Hope it won't have any long term damage.

  • 1 point

Lovely build excellent cable management, did you only buy 1 140mm fan to use as a case fan? doesn't the case support 2 of them on the top and the back?

  • 1 point

Thank you! The back is a 120mm and the top is either 120mm or 140mm. So I put the 120 at the back and a 140 at the top. Both set as exhaust, while the Kraken and the power supply are intake.

  • 1 point

It the lighting the hue plus?

  • 1 point

The lightning is controlled by the motherboard via the asus Aura features. The rgb led's are plugged in to the rgb headers on the board. Just one of the many features of the Maximus VIII Hero Alpha

  • 1 point

Are the light strips going all around the case or just 1 led strip?

  • 1 point

I have 2 CableMod® WideBeam™ Magnetic LED Strip RGB - 60cm. Both plugged in to the motherboards RGB headers. They don't go around 100% but enough to light the whole case nicely.

I love the build, but quick question: is push/ pull possible, even with a Gefore GTX 1080 Ti?

  • 1 point

I'm new to the computer building community and am trying to learn about everything I can. With your storage, what is the point of the 3 hard drives? Do you use the Samsung SSD as your main, and the PNY and Seagate as just overflow? I know the more space the quicker things will boot up and what not, but is the Samsung faster than the PNY or something? Also can you set a certain hard drive as your main one? Sorry if these are all dumb questions, but I'm just trying to learn as much as possible.

  • 1 point

The Samsung is only for Windows. Super fast and reliable. You should have a separate drive for that like an ssd or M.2 drive. The PNY is for my most used applications like video editing software and games i play the most. And the traditional hard drive is for storage. (music, movies, games and misc)

  • 1 point

Hi, I have the same board and cooler, i'm thinking of getting 4 sticks of Dominators too, did you have any trouble getting the ram in as it seems the hoses coming out of the pump get in the way a little bit.

  • 1 point

Put the Kraken on first and the sticks after. Fit in nicely. They touch the coolant hose but no danger at all to the ram.
