Description

I wanted a budget gaming computer. I wanted Intel because after its no longer useful for games I can run Linux or FreeBSD (yes those OSs run on AMD but Intel drivers in Linux seem to work a bit better as of today). I reused lots of old parts like a GPU, case, and power supply. It is crazy loud. I want to replace the GPU, case, case fans, PSU, and CPU cooler. I am confused as to why it's so loud. It's like a jet engine. I think something might be broken. I think its the CPU cooler. I will investigate.

Seems like my temps are way better than they need to be. Perhaps I can use something simple like a tuned fan curve.

GPU load test was done in Doom. CPU load test was done in Aida64.

Update: So I spent some time, investigating the noise. It was the CPU fan + the case fans. I went into bios and set them all to silent. Problem mostly solved

Part Reviews

Motherboard

AsRock was timely to release a BIOS/UEFI fix for the Intel ME vulnerability. I am very impressed by that.

As far as the board goes, it gets the job done. The BIOS/UEFI is pretty good (the UI/UX is intuitive). This is a good board for someone looking to get into Coffee Lake.

Frame rates in Doom are good 60-120 fps @ 1920x1200

That's a pretty impressive build +1

haha thanks! It's a fun machine to play around with

Might be worth sticking a simple AIO or Cryorig H7 in there if the CPU cooler is the source of the noise.

Oh nice that CRYORIG H7 looks really cool actually. I think I might buy that now haha. I was thinking of doing something kinda janky: I was gonna zip tie a silent wings 3 to a hyper 212. The CRYORIG would match the case and fans though. Plus if I wanna try the janky zip tie trick, I still have the option.

The H7 is often similar price to the 212 yet has a much better fan and usually mounts much easier. Plus I'm a Cryorig fan after using their C7 in 3 SFF builds.

Good stuff. I think the gtx1050 for $80 would have matched this build better imo. Either that, or an 8350k or 8400 instead of 8100. Thats a nice mini PC for cheap either way

Yes, for someone looking at this config and thinking of building something similar (if you don't have a 780 just sitting in a closet), I agree that the 10XX cards are better.

Personally, I am eying one of those MSI 1070tis. It's probably overkilled but even a 1060 might feel like a sidegrade not an upgrade in some games. Not sure though.

wow, the temps on stock cooler are amazing!

How does the GPU compare to new ones on the market (GTX 1060, GTX 1050ti, etc.)?

Although a neat build, why the 8100? like you've got the board to OC yet you chose a non K sku CPU, otherwise a nice build.

Good question. There are a couple reasons. 1) it was cheaper. 2) I wanted dual Intel NICs. Maybe a better mobo option will come out in the future, but I figured the intel nics won't be cheap anyways.

It's also kinda nice being able to upgrade to an 8700k. Not sure if I will though.

I like having the option to make a pfSense router from it. I may or may not do that but using Intel nics is a good way to ensure I can.

I see, finally the guy who MADE the list that replies instead of these Boi's who think they are you. Thanks.

Still though, even if it can't be overclocked doesn't matter when it's still a neat build.

Those are the only motherboards out right now for the platform.

The Z370 motherboards are the only ones.

Boi #1: I'm asking WHY he chose the 8100 istead of the 8350k

The price/performance.
