Description

Started off as an idea of color matching some components. It slowly morphed into what you see now. Alot of the parts are from other projects that made their way into this machine. It was not made to be a power house, but rather to achieve a certain type of style. So when you see the Corsair H115i cooling a low end i3-4150 and your like What! Alot of these parts i have left over from reviews and such, so its not quite what it seems. Also if you look up the mother board you will see that the color on the heat sinks is a sort of gold color. I took them off and painted them with a high heat white gloss paint. I was thinking it would increase the heat since the paint could be acting as an insulator, but i noticed no change in temps. So win for that!

Hope you like it, i sure did. Loved the way it turned out being a complete black and white system with the Storm Trouper and Boba on the case. I absolutely loved the outcome.

Edit:

I added some more pictures per a request. Some are of the computer pre new additions. One includes a picture of my attempt at painting a ram heat spreader which turned out devastating and resulted in buying new ram =). Some during install and pre vinyl. In one of the photos you will see the 3 case fans installed in the top of the case. I was trying to decide if I wanted the radiator to be in the front or on top. I found that I liked the look of the radiator in the top better since the fans only left too much vacant room in the top.

I found those pictures on Google images. I ran them through a vinyl program, sized them accordingly and then cut them out of a sheet of vinyl with a machine. Then applied them to the case. What you see that is black is the vinyl, what is white is the case.

  • 1 point

Yeah Read that after I wrote that. Nice job though, I usually do wooden or metal stencils (the metal one's are usually cut by a machine as well) then paint them on.

I have to say I have been impressed with this CPU. Originally purchased for a HTPC build, it made it into this build. It is a low tier processor for a reason, but it dose a fine job for regular use.

  • 2 points

I mean it's kinda warranted if you're going to be playing new games on it. Rise of the tomb raider kills it, the division did wonders on my i3 4150 and so on. It's pointless now to get a i3 for gaming if you want to play the latest AAA titles. HT only does so much.

  • 2 points

Future proofing really I think drives these arguments. Yeah dual core is fine now but later it's going to not be fine (theoretically). When that happens maybe you won't be able to upgrade the CPU because Intel is no longer producing this particular socket anymore. Can't say it's flawless logic but I think that's what is being applied here.

  • 2 points

actually the skylake i3's perform just as good as the 6600k in a lot of cpu intensive games. skylake i3's benefit greatly from fast ram

  • 1 point

I've seen them bottle neck a 750ti on the division and also on rise of the tomb raider. I'm not saying that it is a bad cpu but the way games are going now it night be smart to get a quad core cpu.

  • 1 point

also link to these benchmarks where the i3 bottlenecked a 750ti please?

https://youtu.be/BmsiweP8YNA

Also cause I actually had a i3 4150 and 750ti. Check out my build. The 750ti hits 99% usage on new games like RoTR and the division. Cpu usage hits 100% constantly on the division and cause HUGE stuttering issues.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! THIS WAS MY PLAN! YOU TOOK MY PLAN! YOU TOOK THE PRECIOUS! Except mine was going to be Touhou of Fate (so hard to decide) themed and I have yet to convince my only artistic friend that he wants to do it.

  • 1 point

lol. Well good luck to you on your build! I'm sure it will look great!

  • 1 point

Ohhhh sick! Which touhou girl are themeing off? Not reimu haha? Right?~~

  • 1 point

I really wanted to Cirno, but couldn't really get behind the whole blue theme. I'm actually finding it pretty hard to decide. I haven't played enough because for some reason I decided that only kids play in easy mode so I would like to explore the games a bit more before I decide. Maybe I could get RGB lighting and do a Flandre Scarlet thing on a side panel where the... crystals? Are they crystals? light up with a breathing effect. Character design-wise though, Reimu kind of ties with Flandre for me because I love the wing-things, but Reimu is just all around well-done. Doesn't hurt that she gets a lot of fanart. The picture from here is my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh8uiKbT9_E

If I went the Fate route I would want to do Gilgamesh, but gold doesn't really work on a white case either. I prefer to have the build match the character, but couldn't find enough gold parts for him. It would probably be Sabre-lily since the color scheme matched if I went for Fate. But then I would feel bad about abandoning the One True Tohsaka. Decisions, decisions...

  • 1 point

You could do a lot of what this feature build has done, spray painting heatsinks etc to help match.

My, you really got me thinking on doing a Touhou feature build as well! Honestly I feel I might be themeing off Sakuya but I do indeed like the crystal idea with rgb lighting, might seems a little difficult to pull off though! That'd be really cool~

I myself haven't really been too much into the shooting games of the series, but I played 10.5 and 12.3 a lot, so thats what I've mainly heard about it.

  • 1 point

I've got a white mobo so there's no need :). Actually, it would be pretty cool to cover up the MSI logo and put a touhou logo on top. I would use a light diffuser and it would be cool if the design could wrap around the case. Maybe Flandre on the right side of the front with one wing taking up the right panel leaving room for small designs and another wing around the left up to the side panel window.

Ninja edit: colored light diffusers would allow me to have it light up but only stay one color and do it in a minimalistic art style.

  • 1 point

That sounds pretty increadible! Gotta use a kawaii pic though for Flandre in front. What case do you have, curious. Perhaps you could do shadow cut outs like in the Touhou amv, Bad Apple? Or if you had greater ideas A complete decal wrap does sound pretty nifty~

I'm currently still planning this out as I never actually thought about doing a Touhou orientated theme, I was just about to start off a minimalistic black, white and purple/blue build. Dude I really would like to work on this~ It'd be fitting if you had Flandre or even Remilia together while I can try out Sakuya

Time to do more research as well as collaborate with my former Digital art teacher!

thanks for the comments. Glad you liked it.

  • 1 point

lol like i said in the comments, most of these items came from other builds and just got added for this project. The end goal was the looks and to promote ideas to others rather than the focus to be about the internals. The cooler was from a review, the motherboard was from a review, the hard drive was from a review, the CPU was from an HTPC build i had, and so on. I personally use this machine for school work and very rarely game.

I know people will focus on the hard ware but that was not the intent of this build. It was for ascetics only and to create something that was pretty cool looking. Its not going to win any awards for hardware.

Nice build! And the parts make sense per the explanation. +1

I used the same ram, close to the same CPU, and the same GPU. Liked your theme, something different is always good!

In my next build/upgrade, thinking about the H110i GTX (for a higher end, hotter CPU of course)... wondering, how do you like it, in terms of noise level?

  • 1 point

Noise level is ok on quiet. It's actually a great cooler and I really love it. If I was going to get a cooler to get serious about cooling I would go with the thermaltake 360mm AIO. I've found those deliver the best temps and are fairly quite if you can put the fans ok a controller.

  • 1 point

Ok thanks! My current mid tower (if I were to reuse it for the build), probably can't accommodate the size of a 360mm radiator. Thanks for the tip though, I'll keep that in mind in any case, since I likely go for a full tower next time

There is some room for flexibility of course. Right now it is just my work/school machine and it does a great job at that! Honestly if i was going to upgrade it, I would rip out all of the internals and skip to DDR4 and 1151.

  • 1 point

I actually would go to 2011-3 instead of 1151. I have the i7-6700HQ and it runs all my games just fine but I like the 5820K an 5930K better

NZXT HUE+ would finish this build off very nicely because of the black and white theme. Good build, how does the i3 go under load. And are you playing games on it and how well do they run? Also, did you run into any problems with building it? Just wanting to know as I'm doing a black and white theme with my first build and I'm also going to start of with an i3. Thank you! Enjoy your build! :)

  • 1 point

The I3 does very well for gaming at 1080p but you will bottleneck it. You can definitely game on it with a 960 for sure, but don't expect to get everything out of current release titles.

Well i did run into some problems during the build. I had some existing ram that I was going to paint like i did my motherboard. Well that did not fair so well. I heated up the heat spreaders to try and loosen the adhesive enough to pull them off to paint. Needless to say i had to purchase new ram.

Your move with the GTX 960 is not bad, but perhaps I would think about competitors and substitutes. R9 380 can be found for $170 and R9 380x for $200 at the moment. Power consumption between the r9 380 and the GTX 960 are extremely similar (within 2%-5%), while the r9 380x on average consumes about 20% more power than a GTX 960. I do not think that 2GB will suffice for 1080p gaming if you if you want maximum settings with modern titles.

Here are some videos of comparison on GPUs, please understand this is about 3 months ago and that there have been driver updates. Also understand that power consumption of the GPU in your build will be different, as the PSU in the video is Bronze certified. Overall it is good, but in my opinion 2GB GDDR5 is not enough (at least for my taste).

AMD GPUs will only gain performance with further DirectX 12 title releases (strangely enough Nvidia GPUs lost FPS due to DX12 while AMD gained), Vulcan API, Asynchronous Compute compatibility, and more driver updates

www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-I7Nm3a1Nc (R9 380x vs. GTX 960)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uOLoKV7b7Q (R9 380 2GB vs. GTX 960 2GB )

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E4Ok84h3bI (R9 380 vs. GTX 960 vs. R9 380x)(newest comparison video I could find, unfortunately the video is not English, but results are.)

Concerning cooling, , if you want better cooling performance, you should get a Delta AFB1212GHE-CF00 that does 240CFM at 62dB (a bit loud), but does an insane 27mm H2O, compared to your stock fan doing 52CFM (per fan) at about 2mm H2O producing 40dB. The Delta is certainly good if you want to try some high level overclocking, and it stays near 25dB producing near 75CFM, or 100CFM near 32dB (per fan), but I would recommend a PWM hub for the fan, as it is not PWM.

  • 1 point

I appreciate the time it took for you to write this. I agree with some of your comments but that was not the reason for this build. I do not game at a serious level. I love Nvidia and have for awhile so that was what my choice was based on. This machine was build for 2 reason. The first was to make use of some old and new parts. And to make a great looking machine that I would not mind looking at for the next few years. Not to build an awesome gaming rig that would blow away benchmarks.

  • 1 point

Yes, I see what you mean. Of course I understand the value and ability of lower tier hardware myself. One of my builds consists of a Pentium G3258 ($40) overclocked to 4.3gHz on air at a max of 60 Celsius and an MSI R7 250 2GB DDR3 ($31) that is overclocked to 1000mHz Memory Clock and 1075mHz GPU clock, and I can say that AMD's optimizations, drivers, and DirectX 12, Async Computer support, and Vulcan API, that this low-tier gaming PC that does Far Cry 4 at 1080p low-med at 35-60+ FPS will be getting much more powerful. Knowing this, a GTX 960 2GB edition is much more of an upgrade my humble R7 250.

Outstanding build! Great job on the color scheme.

Also, get rid of these radiator fans, changed mine for thermaltake's and they're running 4x as silent compared to the stocks, still gets the job done.

  • 1 point

which fans did you get specifically?

  • 1 point

no just go with noctua, or the vardar fans but the stock fans are fine, since it is an i3, no need to upgrade trust me.

  • 1 point

my question was in regards to noise not to cooling. This cooler on an I3 is overkill anyways.

  • 1 point

the fan on your rad should be spinning at its lowest rpms, but if that still bothers you then go with the noctua, or the vardar fans, they are the, in the fan business. if it i your pump that bothers you then put foam over it.

  • 1 point

This model right here.

Only difference compared with mine is, well apparently the color that shipped in, high-static profile fan it is. Since I've heard corsair static fans were always loud I changed them rightaway as soon I started building my rig. Once you fire up these Thermaltakes, you'll simply won't hear it xD

Nice job! I have the same case and your old Master Cooler EVO 212 on my build right now. I actually wanted to do the same thing with some vinyl stickers but with a Red Dead Redemption theme. Eventually i'll upgrade my cooler to a liquid one as well, again great gob!

You should spend more on your cpu and your gpu. Buying a $120 cooler means nothing when you can get much more performance in an i5 and a 970, but you case is sick.

Hey m8. Does that monitor work well for you? I'm planning on getting the same kind as a secondary monitor.

Sorry, I really do not have a clue what you were trying to accomplish with a beast rig and then a i3-4150. why not spend 10$ more and get a skylake i3? I would recommend a better power supply also, check johnnyguru's website. And that gtx 960 is only 2gbs VRAM. Not much to say, I know GPUs are very expensive, but this should be usually most of the money on the build. If a 960 is all you could get at least get the 4gb version it's like 20$ more.

Other than this, I like the look of it. I do not really like star wars. ;(

It gives options for an upgrade path to something like an i5 4690k or an i7 4790k.
