Description

Had an old Hp pavillion dv7 laptop that was just barely cutting it for games, u know like 20-30 fps I got used to it but wanted to upgrade when the time came and decided 'why not build 1!' First ever build so I would appreciate comments and stuff...tried to go for a yellow theme but then the new GTX 900's came out and none of them were yellow.... Future modifications include painting over the red on the MSI shroud to yellow to better match my theme....

Few things about this case. I had the RM 750 before but it didnt fit, had to return it and get the 650 so make sure if your using this case that you measure your PSU length!

Cable management wasn't actually that bad, the flat modular cables made it easier but maybe its because its my first build so i don't know what i'm missing out on.

Its a great little quiet rig, even at load, sitting on my desk next to me i can barely hear it and when i put my headphones in I cant hear it at all.

Mouse is left over from laptop and i'm a student so windows 8.1 was free I use it to play mainly MMO called aion and battlefield 4. This thing crushes everything i throw at it and still stays 60 fps. Only time i lose 60 FPS is if i use DSR (dynamic scaling resolution) to render at 4K on my 1080p, then frames drop to 40 on average but i can leave it on 2K with no problems..

The NZXT is great I can light my case any color I want! I can make it fade, flash, blink, its just great for fun.

I haven't overclocked the chip at all yet and im not finished overlcocking the GPU (still new to everything) but so far no problems.

I wasn't originally going to do this, but this website was so helpful to me as a first time builder and I see that there are not many of these builds with the xigmatek aquila case, and of those there are, I didn't see any builds which used high end cards, so I decided to help out by putting this one in.

If you want more pictures of certain stuff let me know! Comments are appreciated!

Edit: The PSU makes a buzzing sound whenever i put it under load....it sounds like the PSU fan is off bearing....should i RMA the PSU or is it no big deal?

How'd you like the case? That's what I'm using for my next build

This case is great! I was worried at first because the GPU uses fans which are placed directly in the window with no ventilation, so I thought i'd be suffocating the card. However this is certainly not the case as I've shown in my GPU temps! But like I said just be careful with the PSU, make sure it can fit WITH THE CABLES PLUGGED IN. on paper the RM 750 fits into the case and it does, but if you try to put it in with the cables it doesnt. you need to leave around 2-3cm past the PSU length for cables when plugged in.

Great part choice! How's the 970? I'm thinking about picking one up.

the 970 is just amazing. I've never seen such value for the buck. Right as this came out my R9 290 sapphire came in. I saw the price and perfomance of the GTX and said 'oh hell no!' I didnt even open the 290, just sent it back immediately and got the 970. Sure it messed with my color scheme, but well worth it in the end! And i will just have to do some modding on the GPU shroud to match me theme!

You should have gotten the asus strix model, its just all black

i didnt like the strix because from the reviews i read MSI seemed to be a better all round card

Great balanced build. We can see that you've made your researches. But do you think to overclock your CPU ?

I'm still new to all of this, as a gamer i thought it more important to finish OC my GPU first. the clocks I have posted currently are without touching the voltage, and I know i can still push it farther, just that buzzing noise gets louder so I was worried and decided to leave it for now.

Further down the road of course i will OC the CPU, but its not currently bottlenecking the GPU so i don't have an extreme need to do it right now.

Seriously you did a great job. Just remember that if you don't overclock your cpu, you can stay with this cooler but if you change your mind, don't forget to switch to a better cooler like corsair h50 or above.

from the reviews I read this cooler is ok for overclocking too, maybe like 4ghz but just nothing crazy like 4.3+ ghz, thats why i got it.

this is a very nice build. You did a good job in your part selection and the build itself.

It would have been nice if you were able to paint yellow slices to replace the red accents on the MSI Twin Frozr V but nice build nevertheless.

  • 1 point

yes this is definitely in my future directions! I wasn't exactly sure how to go about doing it though...yellow slices? i was thinking cover the black parts with tape then spray paint the reds yellow...any ideas on how to best accoomplish this would be awesome!

I am referring to the red stripes, slices or accents on the right side of the graphics card.

ohh thats an idea just paint yellow strips and stick them on? good tip thank you!

Yes, make sure you don't get permanent adhesives to stick them on top.

So how is that 970 performing in games in comparison to your old HP laptop? Nice build btw I like it.

HP laptop - BF4, low settings, avg 23 fps, min 13

Bumblebee - BF4, Ultra settings, 2K resolution scaled to 1080p using DSR, avg 60 FPS, min 53

Needless to say its like im playing a different game!

Well I'm glad you are getting a nice experience man. Thanks for the reply btw.

nice build. how is the monitor working out for you? i was looking at another 23' model in asus at the same price with higher customer rating but yours seem to have that borderless design on three sides which i like.. so did u have any specific reason to choose this?

  • 1 point

It would be easier to help you compare if I knew the other monitor you were looking at! I chose it for two main reasons: I dont have a speaker system so i wanted a monitor with built in speakers for when i don't want to use my headphones. Classy look with the dial stand and silvery control panel. The borderless design isnt actually borderless, as you can see form the 1st pic when its on it still puts a black border on the edges, but yes when its off with its matte finish, it looks like it has no border which is a nice perk

Great build! I am building something similar too! I am new to building as well, and I have a few questions on this case. First, do you think a GTX 980 would fit in there? Would 2 GTX 980's running in SLI fit? I have the EVGA version, which has a large cooler attached to it. Once again, great build!

At the bottom of your parts list under Custom...I assume that is the LED lights? Where can I find those sir?

I bought them from Canada Computers but I also heard NCIX has them

I'm doing a build in this case as well, and I made the mistake of purchasing the Hyper Evo 212 without doing my research. Did you end up using it anyway even though the backplate wouldn't fit? If so, what problems could arise from that. If not, what solution did you end up going with?

my air cooler fit fine...so im not sure how to help you lol

I too have a 212 evo in my aquila. The cooler fits fine. You have to mount it outside the case though. http://pcpartpicker.com/b/7kQV3C

Did you put the psu with the fan facing up or down?

fan down so it can draw air from the bottom of the case since the case is raised

Hi man like the build. Did a build my self in this case http://pcpartpicker.com/b/7kQV3C

I see the spectre pro fan in parts list. Does it fit ? I hate the stock fan but the bitfenix fan seems to large in width.
