Description
This is the first Desktop build that I have ever done. For the past 6 years I have been working with a Dell Studio 1558 as my daily driver. In those 6 years I ran it nearly 24/7. So I put a decent amount of wear and tear on it. I wanted a desktop that could keep up with me and my "Always on" lifestyle. Its important to note that this was built as a VIDEO EDITING MACHINE. This is primarily what it was designed for. If anyone has any questions post them down below and ill do my best to answer.
I think I did a fairly good job of keeping the whole system pretty balanced out. The only thing I should have done was gone with 32GB of RAM instead of 16GB, but so far it hasn't been an issue in the slightest. When it does ill add some more. The computer is pretty quiet during normal operation and gaming. But recently I have been using Folding @ Home to put all of this processing power to good use. This seems to be the only program to really make this beast sing. I was able to get an easy overclock of 4.5GHz on the 5820k using Linus Tech Tips' Guide. I haven't tried to go any higher just yet. But i bet i could get to 5.0GHz. Havent tried overclocking the GTX 980 Just yet, but i will soon.
I forgot to put this in there earlier. epicnerdgreg brought it to my attention that I forgot to list about that other HDD. For this build I purchased 3 drives. I bought the Samsung 840 for the boot drive and programs. I bought the WD 1TB Black drive for games and anything else that is large and needs faster read and write speeds. Then I bought the 4TB WD Green drive for movies and video storage. I have a 3TB WD MyBook but thats almost full. I have 1.1TB worth of movies and almost 1TB of footage. I duplicated the entire My book onto the Green Drive. I also remapped the videos, pictures, documents, ect. folders onto that drive as well. So I Just have to click on that library and instead of using SSD space I have tons of space on the Green Drive.
My only gripe with the whole computer has to do with the 4 Star rating on the Asus motherboard. Its great and the UEFI is nice and easy to use. It makes it easy to overclock. But the weird double boot thing it does is odd and takes a long time to get past the BIOS. I have quick-boot and everything enabled but its just a bit slow. Once it hits windows its about 4 seconds to hit the log in screen. Now with the upgrade to Windows 10 everything is much speedier.
Another edit I am making now is some upgraded fans to go in the front of the case on either side of the radiator. I had been hearing people say that the included fans with the H100i were quite loud... And they are compared to the new Fractal Design Venturi fans. I have 2 pressure fans pushing into the radiator and 2 air flow fans pulling out keeping the air moving inside of the case. I am a college student and the school provides us with small desks, so I decided to build a monitor riser and desk extension that would be able to help house the computer and raise the monitors off the desk. This gives me more space on my desk and makes it look much cleaner. I will post some more pictures of the setup once final exams are over.
Part Reviews
CPU Cooler
The cooler itself is great It keeps my 5820k very cool even if it is overclocked. But the corsair link software is total garbage. It uses up a lot of resources and fails to work most of the time. Also it doesn't always report the temperatures of the temp sensors very accurately all of the time.
Motherboard
It does some sort of weird double boot thing when booting up and takes a while to get past the UEFI POST screen but once past that it boots up very quickly into windows.
Memory
Its RAM... there is nothing bad to say about it. Just dont overclock it much and you should be fine.
Storage
Blazing fast drive. I haven't really tried pushing it yet with video editing or anything but it certainly keeps up with everything else.
Storage
Sometimes takes a second or two to spin up. But keeps up with all of my file storage needs. Reading or writing files can be done easily over 100MB/s for videos and music.
Case Fan
These are very quiet very powerful fans. The build quality is VERY good. They have all metal construction, and a matte black feel to them.
