Main Purpose: Gaming and Image/Video Editing

Build Date: January 2011 (Sandy Bridge early adopter, woohoo!)

This isn't the original build, here are the upgrades I've done over time...

-- soundcard (Asus Xonar DG) added

-- had to replace mobo with B3 revision

-- memory upped from 8gb to 16gb

-- SSD (Samsung 840 Pro 256gb) added as new OS drive

-- GPU changed from MSI Cyclone GTX 460 1gb to Gigabyte GTX 670 2gb

Notes on performance:

Great gaming performance for 1080p and runs emulators (PCSX2, Dolphin) extremely well.

Sometimes I do wish that I went with a 2600k instead, but the OCed 2500k is still no slouch when it comes to Photoshop/encoding/etc. And I suppose getting a CPU with HT is still an upgrade option down the line... ;)

For its price, the case is surprisingly well-built and includes some nice features such as tool-less installation for the majority of parts and cable routing behind the mobo. Though obviously it does make compromises on material and the top-mounting PSU is a bummer. Still, I was looking for the smallest, lightest mid-tower possible and the Asgard II fit the bill. I might just go mATX/ITX for my next PC because size/portability is a big factor for me.

Overall, I've been extremely happy with this build. Started out as a budget system for around $700 (grabbed some bundle deals on Newegg and I thank my lucky stars I live near a Microcenter :P) but I have painlessly upgraded it since then to maintain a solid level of performance. :)

BUT, why 16GB or RAM?

Have you had the 2500K for a while? Because if you just bought it I would recommend returning it and getting a 3570K. My only gripe about this build would be the top mounted PSU and the 16GB of RAM. Unless you are a heavy editor, then the RAM is fine.

Why would he need the 3570k? They're like almost the same thing... The 2500k runs cooler since it has 32nm not 22nm.

The 3570k is preferred in new builds because of its PCIe 3.0 controller. At this point, he should just stick with the 2500k - they're identical in performance, and he would have to return the motherboard if he wanted to have PCIe 3.0. That OEM copy of W7 is tied to that P8P67, so he'd also have to get another copy of that, as well.

Technically, the 2500k only runs cooler since the 3570k has a much higher heat density and has poor thermal paste between the die and the IHS. 22nm CPUs are (in theory) supposed to run cooler than 32nm ones, but Intel botched that up.
