My first ever gaming PC build. Always gamed on overpriced gaming laptops. I know. Shame on me. My favorite color is red, and what goes well with red? Featuring Charlotte, my Black Widow.
PURPOSE: School, general use, casual to moderate gaming.
CPU: I was going to get the 4670K, but microcenter has a decent deal on the 4770K for $249.99. I also had a gift card that brought the price down to 4670K level so 4770K it is! Also, since I got the K I can explore overclocking later.
CPU COOLER: I was originally set on a water cooler like the Corsair H100i. But had to downgrade to the Noctua at half the price to upgrade the graphics card. Also tried the NH-D14 but my lord, it’s obscenely huge in this particular case, with not much clearance to do ANYTHING to the point where it became a big headache and I returned it. I plan on fiddling with some mild OC when I have more time.
MOTHERBOARD: Was going to get the MSI GD65 or even the Asus Maximus Gene boards but the G45 Gaming reviews convinced me. It has the features I need for a reasonable price and it’s not a POS board.
MEMORY: 8GB should suffice. I plan on doubling it when prices drop.
STORAGE: Pretty good ( albeit small) SSD and pretty good HDD. I don’t have a lot of stuff and stuff I have are on the cloud or external HDDs so no need to go crazy here. Would like a bigger SSD though.
VIDEO CARD: I was first set on the GTX 770 but decided I could get a 780 if I downgraded the cpu cooler, MOBO and SSD. I am somewhat remorseful about the MOBO downgrade but what do you guys think?
CASE: Right color scheme and had all the stuff I need at a decent price. Good value.
PSU: Pretty good PSU and had a solid sale on it. I don’t plan on SLI or anything so this one should be good until the next build.
I also bought a pair of Corsairs AF120 Quiet Edition LED fans and a Cooler Master 200mm LED fan. They look nice in the dark!
Overall I am happy with the build. If there are any gripes, I wish I had a better MOBO and bigger SSD. My biggest complaint is with the case. Overall it is a good case but it had a lot of small faults that, in hindsight, I would have spent a bit more time researching a better case ( with the red/black color) and I would probably would spend a bit more money on a better case and save myself some of the headache. If you want to know what’s wrong with the case, ask me and I’ll reply.
