Description

As a 15 year old who has only had low end and midrange PCs, I decided to sell my old desktop and save up for building this beast. After selling my old desktop I "only" had to save up $850. This PC was designed with Virtual Machines and gaming, with a black/white color scheme in mind. I have not completely assembled the PC yet, as I have to wait for the HDD, PSU, and GPU to arrive (come in on the 10th).

One nice thing is that this is the FIRST build posted on this site with the ASUS X99-A ii. Will update the build when I receive the remainder of my parts. Prices are after tax and discounts.

Edit: (June 9, 2016) added PSU and added a picture demonstrating AURA. Any lose cables in this images were put through the grommets so that I only have to put the GPU in the PCIE Slot and connect the power.

Edit:(June 10, 2016) received the rest of my parts, added images.

Part Reviews

Motherboard

A great motherboard+ RGB LEDs

Case

Very good case for the money, but hard to install some components with large screwdrivers

Monitor

This is possibility the best monitor I have ever owned. It has a 1ms response time, free sync (for AMD users) , and 4k. Although the panel is TN, it is comparable to a low end IPS panel. Plus, I got it for $300!

Good to see you went for a 5820k instead of the new broadwell-e 6800k. If you overclock the 5820k, you can get more performance out of it than a 6800k overclocked.

Plus, the 6800k would have prevented me from getting a gtx 1080.

Wowa, that would have definitely made it not worth to get the 6800k.

Nice Color-scheme, as a 16 year-old I reccomend that you find a job that can fuel your PC desires haha. But anyways +1

Nice rig man. I'll be completely re doing my current pc that I had saved up for since the age of 12 (got it when I was turning 14) since I have a job now.

Just wondering if the GPU you have in the partslist is the exact same card that you bought. It's for sure just the ACX 3.0 and not any other variant of the card? Probably going to be getting it and want to make sure that what I'm looking at here is what I'll be getting.

  • 1 point

It's just the ACX 3.0.

I don't buy preOC'ed cards if there's a cheaper option at stock frequency.

Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate it. I have another question for you. Is the card RGB or does it just come with blue LEDs?

  • 1 point

it's just white LEDs. (the picture makes it look blue)

Ahh, okay. Cool. Perfect for me. Thanks again for the answers. Enjoy the build, man. This thing is a powerhouse.

Does the LED on that 1080 come out as white in person? The picture or my monitor make it to seem more blue.

  • 1 point

It's white in person. One of the best white LEDs I've seen on a computer, actually.

Hey man, what are your thoughts on that 5820k? I'm planning on building a rig with the Asus Strix GTX 1080, and I am wondering if I should go 6700k or 5820k, and the x99 or z170 motherboard :)

  • 1 point

Simply because of how many apps and games are becoming multithreaded, the 5820k is a good choice. Plus, overclocking it a bit will give you better single core performance than the 6700k.

In all honesty, I am not. It's amazing how much profit you can make by selling a PC to people who don't know much about them. I sold a $650 pc for $1350, by comparing it to s equivalent prebuilt PC by a major OEM. I wish I was rich.

I'm interested, what were the specs of the prebuilt PC?

Looking to buy the same mobo as you but I'm scared that I'm going to brick it. This is going to be my first build.

  • 1 point

As long as you don't flash an incompatible BIOS, there's almost no way to brick a motherboard. Plus, you only need to update BIOS if the board is giving you problems.

  • 1 point

Did you have any issues with the mother board during your build? ive see a lot of people saying they did and was wondering how your build went.

  • 1 point

I didn't have any problems with mine except the random resetting of CMOS if I have an unstable overclock.

How is the monitor with the 1080 a month later? do you get 60fps at 4k in most games? im thinking about getting this with a 1080 as well. I would love to see some benchamarks that you got.

  • 1 point

Most new games run near 60 without Antialiasing (not needed at 4k).

The only game I've seen get under 40 at any point is ARMA 3, (and we all know it runs like crap) but I also have a fairly small game library.

What games do you play?

GTA V, ARMAs, Battlefields, Just Cause, heavily modded Skyrim, Fallout games, battlefront

How many frames do you get in battlefield and the fallout games and at what settings? Thanks :)

  • 1 point

Maxed out on Fallout 4 without antialiasing:50-60 with random drops to around 40 or so Maxed out in Battlefield 4 with 4xMSAA: locked at 60.

Hi,

I just finished a build using the X99-A II and I'm having USB3.0 issues galore. I first noticed the problem when I plugged in a WD 2TB USB3.0 portable disk. I heard repeated plugin/unplug audio alerts and the drive icon would appear/disappear sometimes with a questionmark. The behavior continues until I unplug the device. Asus tech support has not been very helpful - other than to suggest I return it which I don't really want to do if it's a fundamental problem with the design. Here's a thread that describes the problem experienced by others... unfortunately, no fix: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/787bf77d-33af-4ab3-8d8a-cd43007ad747/usb-3-instability-issues-windows-81-windows-8-the-usb-3-stack-is-unstable-on-multiple-pcs-and?forum=w8itprohardware

Any ideas? Are you seeing similar issues? I have 4 devices plugged into USB3.0 it's just when I plugin the 5th when the problem appears.

Edit: BTW: I see lots of errors in the "portable devices" section of device manager. I also see an exclamation under Universal Serial Bus controllers section "Unknown USB Device (Configuration Descriptor Request Failed). Problem is, even after "unistalling" they just come back after reboot.

Here's my device mngr: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11774834/deviceManagerErrors.png

I'm running windows 8.1 with all updates. Here's my components list: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/X42RTH

I haven't experienced anything similar. Maybe reset CMOS?

  • 2 points

I tried that - made no difference.

Thanks for the reply...

Since this post I re-installed windows 8.1 and installed only the LAN and chipset driver from the ASUS driver disk. It fixed the problem (I think...) but I'm still seeing an "Unknown USB Device (Configuration Descriptor Request Failed).

I'm thinking at this point I've got a flaky motherboard.

try booting from an Ubuntu live disk to see if the problem still persists on it.

OK. Do I need anything other than the ubuntu install image? I.e,. it has all the drivers?

Do you mind posting an image of your device manager USB section?

no, you don't need anything else.

The reason for such an expensive GPU is that I wish to do 4k gaming, and I never found a Fury at price that made me consider one.
