Description

EDIT: THIS BUILD WAS REPLACED WITH THIS https://pcpartpicker.com/b/FzccCJ and this http://pcpartpicker.com/b/L9sJ7P

Started with a 4790k but ended up going with the 5930k for the 40 PCI lanes. I doubt adding a fourth card would be worth it at this point but I plan to in the near future because the 980 doesn't have long for this world as a top performer with what I hear it will be dropping on the market this fall.

The EKWB Cooling is amazing. Hit 89c running Prime95 but that was the Cap and that's only because the water hits the cards before the CPU. If it went the other way around I'm sure it would be far less. The cards capped out at 52c at the highest point in any given test.

(Warning you might Cry) I used to joke with my father about the power requirements of computers and he said "just build a boiler powered one and stroke the fires." He said this because he spent about 10k on a boiler setup that heats his house and floors. I started planning to build this after he found out he had late Stage 4 Cancer in January. I took over his business shortly thereafter and my time was sucked up for awhile during the transition and his treatments. Now I didn't get a boiler going but I did get a water setup that looks somewhat like a boiler. My dad has been hallucinating while I lay here in a cot next to him in the hospital but I took a video of me running my setup and he laughed quite a bit and said "Holy cow you got the boiler going!" I love you dad...

Firestrike score - 27079

Firestrike Extreme Score - 16582

Ram is at 2666 14-15-15-34 1t

This is effectively 13 Million pixels which is over 1.5 times that of 4K

I will take legitimate questions.

Edit: My father passed away a few days ago. I tinkered more and added the fourth card/new board. Waiting on some custom bolts to come in and I'm adding 8 more fans. It sounds ridiculous and it is but I'm sick of cranking my A/C every time I play TW3 or BF4.

I'm jealous. My build was 3600$ and I thought that was spendy for a gaming PC. But this...

It's awesome. Very very nice build man.

From the specs looks like a good power-house-boiler-reactor:)...Sorry for your Dad...hope he's ok. 3 monitor setup is a killer :) reminds me how good is to play on a big picture:) - I do it on 111 inches (projector) With three 980s you probably gonna be capped by VRam rather than low FPS (some day in the future) :) +1 ....put some more pics

  • 1 point

Pics are up, Capped on VRam yes. Thinking of waiting a month or two for a check or so to come in and going 3x TitanX. Will be a pretty penny but worth it. These new games are picking up so much VRam clutter the better they look. I also tried a surround projector. Really need nice 4k ones to make it worth it imo and I'd rather put it in the Comp cause 4k projectors are about 4k$ each lol

+1 for the Logitech G13 :-).

  • 1 point

Bought it 6 builds ago lol! It's still the best I think. Don't like the ergo of the new setups and the lack of interfacing with afterburner / mumble / vent / perfmon and most any game out there.

  • 2 points

It looks like there might be some kind of ventilation along the bottom edge of that case? But I still can't help but feel that you're suffocating your power supply. Down facing psu's on carpet makes me cringe. Put a board or a couple tiles or something down under that thing to make a flat surface for your psu to breathe. Please! Otherwise +1 good job, nice rig.

  • 1 point

The case has built in filters that I doubled with cotton filters. PSU rarely breaks ambient room temps and the casing is lifted. You can check out the case on NZXT's website though if you'd like to see what's up.

  • 2 points

It looked like there might be ventilation, just wasn't 100% sure. Good job.

  • 2 points

Doubling up doesn't choke the system either? It seems backwards to increase ventilation by adding more mesh. The general "6 inches from the ground" rule makes a huge difference for me. Regardless, great build with plenty of fun time. +1

Sorry to hear about your pops.

  • 1 point

The mesh addition is only on the power supply intake because it cannot be opened and cleaned as easily as the rest of the system. ' "6 from the ground' is a good rule until you run into the sheer tower height of a full size tower. You can either put your desk on stilts are keep it on the ground. I chose ground as the temperature and air flow are still more than sufficient on this setup.

Hello,

First let me start by saying I love the name, maybe cause I had to babysit one all winter... You have amazing build as well but I can't help but wonder, why so many fan choices? Also any info to where you got them custom backplates, would be great.

Very nice, Lanceleve

  • 1 point

They're actually not "custom backplates" but I couldn't find them in the PCPartpicker list so they were input as custom. Also, this was the first of two builds. The next one I'm still editing the content (video's pictures etc...) will be quad Titan X and 5960x with a custom loop. The fan ordeal is ridiculous I know but I am more into building a refrigerator and putting a PC inside than building a PC w/some cooling. You'll see when I post the next build. Will be under the handle "Kylar182" because that's my Firestrike handle as well as every other site. Look at #37 on Firestrike Ultra Hall of Fame. I plan to go higher but right now I just finished the aesthetics of the build and I'm working on Editing the content. Many people asked for more pics, adding in videos, and so forth so this time around I'm Really getting it "Ultra Mode" before I post anything.

I've a Q in my mind: why did you spend so much? I mean, you have any plan for RoI? Please don't mind for asking.

  • 1 point

Umm, actually I swapped the 5930k for a 5960x and the 980's for Titan X's already. I added a lot more cooling also and swapped the Bios' on the Titan X's. RoI is me gaming on a machine people only dream about, if you remember college econ you'll probably remember a discussion on utils. This was a lot of utils spent and received.

I hope it's okay if I steal your idea for your monitor configuration-- I love how you have the monitor at the bottom sitting horizontal so you can watch system resources and stuff. I think it would be really cool to put a smaller touchscreen monitor in a similar position so that I can use it as a sort-of touch-based control panel to launch programs, etc. Very cool build! And I'm sorry to hear about your father. I can't even imagine.

  • 1 point

It's been rough and the idea is up for grabs. I was actually suggested it by someone on here. Originally it was just a 1080 screen now it's touch based and I dare say it is quite nice. Also this monitor is close to IPS so the angle does not really change the view. W/3 monitors I sit quite far back.

  • 1 point

I see you used a Dell, S2240T. I'll probably go smaller than that, but overall are you pleased with that monitor? It works well for that purpose? Also, I just noticed your fan selection and wanted to ask what you think about those Cougar fans-- I was planning on getting 7 of them (plus my 5 Silencio's) for my next build. Do you find them to be loud? My main concern when it comes to fans is that they're silent-- I care more about the sound than performance really. Again, thanks for sharing with us.

  • 1 point

The Dell is very well built. They are silent of sorts. They are PWM so it depends on how high you set them. At 50% they are equal to the air flow of the next fastest fan on the market but quieter by far. At %100 they are loudish but double the air flow at 120cfm. I use Surround sound noise cancellation head phones so I don't mind.

I am so sorry about you father,my condolences :-( :-( :-(

I hope you are still around.

Got a few questions for ya.

The Desk you have the 3 monitors on,did you build that or buy that? If you brought it where did ya get it? could ya give a link?

I plan to get the same Monitors, just really wish they didn't cost so much :( gonna take like 3 months each to save for them,I mean save 3 months for 1 so 9 months all together lol. Plus the 4th monitor ya have so another 2 months to save after the 9 lol.

I LOVE your setup, how did ya do it with the 3 monitors plus the 4th one?

Would 1 GTX 970 SC be enough for your 4 monitor setup? plus a 800w PSU? I will be getting a i7-4790k in July.

Thanks for the help/advice.

  • 1 point

Okay, lot's to answer. 1, the desk was a cheapy that I augmented so that the keyboard drawer comes out in the middle. These three monitors are equivalent to 6k so my 4 980's barely run them in surround on games. You'll have to shoot for 1080p monitors and even then you'll struggle w/one 970. Not that the 970 is a bad card it's just a lot of pixels to push. The fourth monitor has a "VESA" mount and I connected it to the bottom side of the desk so I could pull it out and move it as needed. An 800w PSU will run a 970 just fine.

  • 1 point

So you built the Desk then?

What would you recommend? I may just get 3 monitors instead. Would 2 970's be fine?

I have always wanted to do a 3 monitor setup for gaming.

Thanks for the help/advice

My system will mainly be for Elite Dangerous and once its finished Star Citizen.

  • 1 point

With 3 1080p monitors 2x970 would be decent but 3x1440p they wouldn't cut it as my 4 x 980's water-cooled barely do. Another thing you have to worry about is refresh rate. Each card can push 240hz but SLI makes them act as one card so 240/3 = 80hz per monitor. Yes I "built" a desk but in reality I pretty well just modified one. I would get a board that is somewhat future proof. Start with a 4xsli rampage V and a 5820k and just put 2 970's in. If you want to upgrade in the future you can go with a 5960X and more cards.

  • 1 point

wait did you remove the cooling system for the gpu and replaced it with your own design?

  • 1 point

Yes, I like the base clocks of the SC's and their extra thermal protection but you really can't do ACX when you have four cards or they would be furnaces. I put the EK Blocks in and overclocked the crap out of them. Of the people that own this setup mine is #26 World (people w/4 980's and a 5930k) according to Firestrike Records. I just got a 27079. http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5206656

  • 1 point

Can i know where you got that? i wanna learn about doing my own cooling system and i really like to make my PC as unique as possible. Also has anyone ever done this before? or have a video about this

  • 1 point

If you check YouTube for "slinky supercomputer" you will see the most beautiful PC ever. Honestly playing in 1440p surround is massively taxing on any system so I'm about to do the crazy and swap to 5960X/4 Way Titan X + another PSU and more. Yes EK Water Blocks has the best customer service you could ask for in the way of installing the water itself and there are numerous videos on installing their products. As far as the LED's that is of my own design and is facing a massive improvement w/"Boiler Power 2.0." I've also gotten into acrylic paints and that should improve the overall look as well with the next build.

  • 1 point

can you make a video of the set up? opening the pc and showing it with LED on and off? and can i geta link of where you got the tools?
