Description

This PC was build for my friend, Will Hoover. He's a huge fan of Star Trek. We agreed to keep the theme subtle and clean. The theme is more focused on Enterprise Ship than anything else I loved idea of having diagram of the original ship painted on the side. The custom chassis shroud has Enterprise from The Next Generation TV series. The Warp Core Drive was taken from a TNG play set I found on Ebay. I modified it with power and HD activity and it's slide in and out via storage drive cage. The scale model of U.S.S. Enterprise was given to us by friend Graham Lovhaug after he heard I was doing the build. I couldn't decide on location of the ship until the build was finished. It's really just for grins and giggles. We also agreed that a tribute to the Leonard Nimoy who passed away last year would be good. His character, Spock was airbrushed onto the perforated top grill. Star Trek Beyond sounded good, as we anticipated the movie release this year. The large graphic of the U.S.S. Enterprise on the side panel required a lot of experimentation. Portions of the ship are hand airbrushed over a decal we printed. Our first application of clear coat who lacquer based, which ate through the decal for some unknown reason we still haven’t solved. We had to redo the graphic and switched to enamel based clear coat. A lot of time was invested in hiding cables and liquid lines, so the interior is very clean, no clutter. The liquid cooling consists of the following components. I've recorded all of the build stages here, http://mnpctech.com/phanteks-luxe-star-trek-tribute-gaming-pc.html

Thank you Jipster, it's rewarding to know that we could help bring more exposure to Leonard Nimoy's spirit in a PC build. This was actually the 2nd one I've created, the first Trek case mod I did was inspired by Spock's Tricorder for Comic-Con here, http://mnpctech.com/star-trek-gaming-pc-case-mod-tribute-to-leonard-nimoy.html

Love the res aswell, looks epic. Only one change I would make is slap some custom cables in, this build deserves them! Easy +1

Though I am slightly confused how the case mod cost $5,500, curious as to what cost so much for the mod work.

  • 6 points

Though I am slightly confused how the case mod cost $5,500, curious as to what cost so much for the mod work.

I see redundancy on some parts. Knowing the eight 1TB Samsung EVO SSDs, three GTX 980 Tis, three Asus ROG SWIFT 27" monitors and two RAM kit sets of 32GB, Corsair Dominator Platinum. Noticing alone the ASUS MOBO is $549.99 and the Sliverstone 1500w is $314.16... Oh my, I'm starting to feel like Regan MacNeil who has her head spinning (and you know the rest...) when I stare at the part list some more. It's a hefty price which that is for certain.

  • 2 points

Id realllllly wager that this is for some kind of high end video production. I could see 2 of the SSDs going into a RAID 1 for the OS and fault tolerance and the rest going into a RAID-0 either very fast storage or for a render disk. Some of the RAM might be reserved for a RAM-Disk. All these parts scream video production to me, but I could be completely wrong and someone might have had more money than they knew what to do with. But $50 for a fan grill?!

  • 2 points

It's certainly possible. Though if it's for a high end video production, I can see $2,000-$3,000 between $6,000 the most... (honestly, I don't want to spend $6k but anyone could or accumulate it to be with much savings or gradually purchase). This build is also most likely designed for the theme & modifications of Star Trek. This is an awesome build but killer instinct pricey. I think it's astounding on how OP made it appear.

I don't know who downvoted you. You were only stating your opinion as any of us are. I'm giving your one back.

Sadly, there will always be a downvote leecher who downvotes because it's YOUR COMMENTS no matter how polite or honest the comment is. It's fine if people disagree unless the comments are rude and attacking/degradeful than that's completely intolerable. (Now I'm going off topic here). Either way, I got your back.

nah, Will just loves Gaming and nice hardware. This is the recipe he chose, and "custom" doesn't come cheap. as for $50 grill, just replicate the same exact grill design and construction I did for less for than $50, and get back to me... Most of the build stages are documented here, http://mnpctech.com/phanteks-luxe-star-trek-tribute-gaming-pc.html

I've been building custom "over-the-top" rigs full time for past 10 years for friends and companies, just do search for "mnpctech" in Google Images and check out my gallery here, http://mnpctech.com/mnpctech-case-mod-gallery.html

  • 1 point

Ohhhhh, so these are completely custom (guessing 3D printed?) fan grills? I thought they were mass produced and I was just ignorant of the manufacturer.

Can I ask you a bit about how you got your business off the ground? I'll PM you if youd prefer that to a comment thread.

  • 2 points

3D Printing in regards to my needs is only good for prototype making, far too slow for my production needs. I just happen to be in the right place at the right time, and recognized the opportunities. You can't make a living from building one-off custom PCs, it's a luxury with a very small market. MaximumPC did interview with me in 2013, https://www.facebook.com/Mnpctech/photos/?tab=album&album_id=529519093795466

I used to restore classic cars with my father before discovering PC modding in 1995. It's much easier to perform work on a PC versus crawling around a cold garage floor, trying to loosen rusty bolts...haha

  • 2 points

It's completely possible. I'm guessing this was all custom airbrushed which can get rather expensive for fine details such as this one. Though spock does look kinda derpy in the pice which makes me chuckle some. Probably looks a lot better in reality than pictures

  • 1 point

Could very well be the case (no pun intended!)

  • 1 point

Yes, the image doesn't do Leonard justice, but try hand airbrushing Leonard over perforated grill and not make him look derpy. I did this other tribute to him for Comic-Con, without derpy artwork, http://mnpctech.com/star-trek-gaming-pc-case-mod-tribute-to-leonard-nimoy.html

I get that comment a lot, haha, That PC was built for Matt Higby, Creative Director for Planetside. He's still using the PC today for Gaming...btw, Super nice guy! The success of that game was largely due to him. He had left SONY the following year... I don't know the reasons why, but I hope he gets back into PC Game Development again someday.

Custom work isn't cheap and it's not for everyone. Consider how many hours and dollars it would cost you to replicate everything we did. This is my next personal build, that has taken me nearly 4 months to do, when I can afford the time required and hardware, http://mnpctech.com/cooler-master-case-mod-mastercase-5-pro-window-clear-smoked-mnpctech.html

Your custom work is amazing, I have seen many of them and there is no doubt in my mind of how awesome they turn out. That Porsche custom build is amazing!! I'm not putting a price on your work but i just think its very expensive... that is just my opinion. :)

Thank you, and yes, it's very expensive. .

  • 1 point

I assume he included the res mod, fan grill mod, etc.

Also it looks like that picture of spock is airbrushed which is pretty expensive.

  • 1 point

agreed, sleeved cables would have given it that extra detail, but Will didn't want them. Custom work is expensive. Consider the time it would take you to replicate exactly what was done, could you paint the same graphic theme on the same case for few hundred bucks? Maybe... I don't know your background. You can see some of the stages here, http://mnpctech.com/phanteks-luxe-star-trek-tribute-gaming-pc.html

  • 1 point

Not questioning the value, was more at looking at what mods were done out of curiosity rather then anything else. Looks like a lot of changes were made but made but hard to tell what as the costs were covered by that blanket figure so to speak. If that cost is derived from the time then fair play, no doubt it took a long time and effort and end result speaks for itself.

Worth every penny, that's amazing!!! With the caveat that it's perfect, it's beautiful, and I love it...what if you had made your warp core into the reservoir?! Beautiful build by a masterclass builder and modder. Kudos on the final build and overall the end product! Also always awesome to see a ROG board as the foundation for an enthusiast build. The EXTREME makes a great choice for foundation of an "enterprise/star treak themed build"

Personally, color wise the DELUXE II would have been a great choice with its white and blue and then the AURA RGB headers being able to interface directly with LUXE LED lighting.

Regardless awesome build!

This is an amazing build but there are a few things that I'm curious about.

Why 3 980 TI's when you could've gotten 2 GTX 1080's and had a 3rd one as a dedicated PhysX GPU and what's with the SSDs? I would never trust 1TB as flash storage. Some 2TB WD Reds would've been optimal for you in this case.

Also it appears you didn't really have a budget so may I ask why you got a 5960X instead of some OP Xeon or 6950X?

Other than that, this is one kickass build

  • 1 point

Holy crap this is amazing! I have to ask, what use is it going to be put to? An 8core extreme and 3x 980Ti's is a lot of power, enough to warrant a miniature warp reactor for certain.

I feel like the msi x99 godlike gaming carbon would have been a better mother board choice. The colors would have looked better.

can handle 128gb of ram spread on 4 channels.

it's channels, it's not slots. cpu will work with 4 different memory channels at once but the board allows up to 2 slots of ram per channel
