Description

This was a project that started out as a simple graphics card upgrade to my Z68 / i5 2500k PC I built in 2011.

Let me start by saying my Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 and the i5 2500k with a Hyper 212 Plus cooler had tremendous value and longevity. I was able to overclock to 4.4Mhz for the entire 5 year life span of the hardware. What wasn't holding up was my Radeon HD 6950's in Crossfire. In most games these cards held their own, but as more demanding games came out, these cards began to cause headaches. Microstutter was very prevalent with these cards. So when the GTX 1060 came out, I pulled the trigger and bought the GTX 1060 6gb MSI Armor OC GT edition. Price / performance is spot on for my 1080p gaming. It doesn't come with future SLI, but I'm not sure I'll run a dual card system again until the experience gets a little better.

So what started out as a GPU upgrade turned into an obsession to build a rig that I liked to look at. I love the Corsair Air 540 Case. I'm not one for cable management and this case hides my cable rats nest nicely. I had to go with the coolest looking cooler I could find...the Cooler Master V8 GTS.

A big shout out to Coldzero for the GPU backplate and the case midplate that hides the Corsair's curious decision to put the 3.5" HDD mounts in the visible part of the case. Love these accessories, it really cleans up the look of the case.

I also used some Silverstone white power cable extenders. Really helps with the white theme.

I added six Corsair SP120 RGB case fans. you'll notice the RGB controller was fed through the NZXT Sentry 3 and stuck to the front of the case for easy access. I like to roll with the white LED's. It makes it look like I'm cryogenically freezing a mechanical heart. By the way - I love the look and control of the Sentry 3, makes the case look like it is more high tech than it actually is.

I've included Time Spy benchmarks pre and post overclocking.

Part Reviews

CPU Cooler

Best looking cooler on the market. Looks like a mechanical heart in the middle of my rig. Cooling on par with my former Hyper 212 Plus.

Case

Love that I can hide my awful rats nest cable management in the side compartment. Makes the windowed compartment very clean. I installed 6 Corsair SP120 RGB fans. Had to get a Coldzero midplate to cover the 3.5" HDD slots.

Sweet build! Nice to see another Stormtrooper hehe. I also have the same 1060 6GB Armor, would really like to know where you got your backplate from. Would be interested in one as well! :)

Thanks and grats on featured! +1

Normally, I look down on color/theme mismatches in builds, but your idea of using a big, ugly red (oh how I hate red themed builds) cooler as a type of mechanical heart in your build is pretty f***king amazing :)

Thanks. I was thinking the same thing about the big mechanical heart.

i think the gpu runs slower in the last pcie slot.

I tried to do some research. Both of the top PCIE slots are 16x...I know if you run SLI they become 8x. Asus suggests that you put a single caRd in the top slot. So am I running 8x in the second slot? How can I tell? I like the look of the card in the 2nd slot.

  • 2 points

Your card is running in 8x. Its something to do with the direct connection to the CPU or whatever because of how close the slot is. Youre fine running it on the bottom slot though, performance difference is close to nothing, Gamers Nexus did a video on this and the difference was like 0.3 frames

  • 1 point

Its 8x only, the Z170-A is only wired for 8x in the second one.

If you take it out of the slot and look at the gold pins in the slot, you can see that they only extend to half of the slot, unlike the top one.

  • 1 point

Ahh. I haven't noticed any performance issues with it in the 2nd slot. I'll do some research to see if it makes that much of a difference. I like the look of the card in the 2nd slot. Why do they say it has 2 PCIe x16 connections? Weird.

  • 1 point

it can run in the second slot but not in the last slot. so 1 and 2 are okay.

  • 1 point

Yeah. It's been running just fine in the 2nd slot.

Also, I love your lighting. And the name Z 17-oA. Lol

My only concern with this immaculate build is that you seemed to use HD120 fans in the parts list but you have SP120 RGB fans installed.

+1 for a great black and white build.

  • 1 point

I couldn't find the SP120 RGB in the parts list.

  • 1 point

The add custom part feature works really well if you copy and past the URL from a big eseller like Newegg or Amazon.com. That's how I would add it to help people out that want to use/find the parts you used in your sexayy system.

I thought that's the standard price.. I know in the last few months DDR4 has gone up in price because of all the new consoles they're building that are using DDR4 chips. That may be it. http://www.pcgamer.com/heres-why-ddr4-ram-prices-have-spiked/

  • 1 point

Might possibly be why prices have gone up. No worries though, I found a good deal on some ddr4 memory
