Description

TL;DR Mini ITX home server with custom laser cut aluminium parts. Used for Plex, database server and dedicated game servers.

I already had a mini ITX server running in a Coolermaster Elite 110 case, hidden in some cabinet, until the cpu fan broke down and my wife said I don't have enough computers around the house (yeah, right).

I experimented with laser cut acrylic in my Blues Brothers build but the result was somewhat plasticky (surprise), so I wanted to go full metal jacket on the case this time.

A good looking case with easily replaceable parts is the Raijintek Metis Plus, which turned out to be surprisingly good quality. After some measuring, vector designing and more measuring, I was happy with the result. The final side panel is 1,5mm thick aluminium (like the original), which was brushed and sandblasted. The material is very much like Macbook cover, I love it! The laser cut edges are completely smooth to touch.

I also experimented with 1,5mm stainless steel (not shown in photos), which was obviously much heavier and showed fingerprints more easily. Might be ok after some careful spray painting though.

The PC components themselves are nothing fancy, but completely silent and powerful enough to run Plex, SQL server and various dedicated game servers (Space Engineers, Empyrion, Minecraft etc).

The fun part is how I somehow managed to ram a full ATX power supply (fanless!) inside this tiny case and still keep the case window clear of cables. Had to literally break apart almost every single part of the case though. Most of the cables are for the secondary SSD, since the boot drive is a brand new M.2 (I love those things).

Since the build is a server, a T-series i5 CPU is a great choice because of the low power usage and thermal load. The CPU package averages on 4 watts idle and 40 watts under full load (35W TDP). The build does have an integrated GPU if needed, as well as room for a small dedicated card, but I mostly use Team Viewer or other remote desktop software.

I hope you like it and get some modding ideas!
