Description

I wanted a computer that can do 4k gaming with no problem and beginner overclocking. I consider myself an enthusiast so that’s the type of build. My budget wasn't too limited but I wasn’t going to go too crazy with costs and this is what I put together. As soon as I can get the time and read how to use the ASUS BIOS I will overclock and post the benchmarks, right now its only running at stock.

CPU: I chose the i7-5930K for the X99 and Im hoping for a 4.3GHz overclock. I'm doing some 3D rendering so I wanted the 6 cores.

Mobo: The ASUS Rampage V Extreme has more features for overclocking than I know how to use and looks pretty good. Not really much else to say about it.

Memory: I would have gone with Corsair Dominator Platinum but the DDR4 price is way to high and due to time restraints to test the parts I had to get the Vengance LPX. The memory is not bad at all and I plan to expand it to 32Gb in the future.

My GPU choice is controversial but I chose the GTX Titan Black due to the 6gb memory and has roughly the same specs as a 780 Ti. I looked at possibly 2x R9 290x GPUs but they weren’t that impressive and only had 4gb of memory. I unfortunately got the GPUs right before the price drop of the R9 290X2 and would have gone with 2 of those instead.

Cooling: I wanted to get the most out of my overclocks so I got a custom loop to cool the CPU and the 2 Titans. Everything is from EK except the fittings and the tubing are from PrimoChill.

Case: I was looking at the H440 but it was getting cramped with the configuration and wasn’t watercooling friendly. I liked the Corsair 760T but they didn't make a red one so I dissasembled the case painted it red and switched the white LEDs to the red ones. Theres also that awesome MSI Dragon I had made just for something a little different. I was going with an MSI mobo originally and lets be real, the dragon looks pretty sweet no matter how you look at it.

Eventually I may get 2 more Titan Blacks or sell them and get a couple of R9 290X2s and upgrage the PSU. I can't take all the credit for my build my friend helped me a little to catch up with computer builds. The last time I built a computer was when the first i7's came out. The only thing I regret on this build was the lights, they suck and are dim.

MSI dragon but no MSI parts.

Who cares! It looks awesome with it!

Nice build!

Why didn't you go for a 2 GTX 980s. They have twice the overclocking potential and significantly more power than the Titan Black.

  • 14 points

The raw speed doesn't make up for the vram in my case. I agree that the 980s are awesome but don't match my needs for 3D rendering projects I do.

  • 1 point

It's not the speed actually. The 900 series are pretty boss when it comes to gaming but cards like the 780ti beat the 980 because the 700 series are a bit better when it comes to editing and rendering through benchmarks. I said a bit. I think so far the GTX Titan Black is still the best card for video editing and rendering (I'm not counting the Quadros, Firepros, etc.)

  • 1 point

Titan haves technologies exclusive to their line that the rest of the Geforce cards do not. This is why they are better at production.

  • 1 point

Exactly. They are more geared towards video editing and rendering.

  • 1 point

Yes yes, excellet point. What kind of modeling do you do?

  • 1 point

The 980 doesn't have enough vram. Hopefully the 8GB variants will come out in time for him to be able to switch the parts out.

  • 3 points

Just wait for the TITAN X"s and 980ti's that will some major power

  • 1 point

actually the r9 390x is going to destroy the 980ti's look them up, trust me you will understand why.

  • 1 point

980 will be superior in rendering/graphics/whatever once nVidia start releasing more advanced drivers that can actually fully make use of the 9xx series. It's brand new right now; drivers won't be fully optimized.

  • 7 points

only thing you need is some sleeved cables. Well...you don't need them, but they would complete the scheme. Other than that, phenomenal +1.

  • 3 points

Was thinking the same thing, and a EVGA pro sli bridge would be nice

  • 3 points

Who needs titans now adays? And i love looking through the builds and finding builds that make my budget look like a kindegartener looking for candy.

Wow...

Well! Ok then. It is red!

Cool paint job, well done.

Considering that good budget, you should have picked up Samsung 850 512GB SSDs. They're are working amazing in my Z97 builds. Also, SanDisk Extreme Pro 480GB model too.

I'm wondering, did you order Cooler Master cooler by mistake?

Eventually I may get 2 more Titan Blacks or sell them

Why sell them? Those are great cards in SLI if you're into audio/video, rendering (say AMBER or Octane) or computational apps.

There are considerably less benefits in 4-way SLI. 3-way should be tops from price/performance factor

But, Scooty Puff jr. sucks?

  • 1 point

But can it run Minesweepeer with no lag?

  • 4 points

I'm afraid not :( Only computers made of angel tears can run minesweeper, and even that it only runs on about 10 FPS.

  • 5 points

Hmmmm... TurboTax? Minesweeper?

In order to run these you have to have at leat 300 ram... Theres this website i found i guess you can download more ram.... downloadmoreram(.)com

  • 2 points

That was a complete joke the website is a joke Plz no ban phill

Oh wow thanks! Downloading RAM! Sounds legit

how thick is that top radiator and do you think theres room for push/pull with impeding the middle 5.25 bay

  • 1 point

I wasnt sure that the radiator was going to impede the bay or not until I got the radiator, so I erred on the side of caution before I set up the push pull.

  • 1 point

Ic. Well how thick is that radiator? Jw because I have the same case and am going to wc it. Also the hdd in the 5.25. How did you mount that?

  • 1 point

You can get adapters to install hdd‘s in a 5.25 bay.

2 GTX 980s or a 295x2 would've been a better option, unless you ordered your graphics cards months before either the 295x2 or 980 were released?

  • 1 point

There were no official specs on the 980s and the 295x2 wasnt rumored when I bought the graphics cards.

  • 1 point

Ah I see, thought so, anyways good build.

  • 1 point

Um, may I ask why you decide to name it Scooty Puff Jr. ?

  • 1 point

Looks great, excellent paint job. It appears the fans on the front rad are working against each other. They should be in push/ pull in one direction or the other but they're in push/ push so the fans are just blowing the hot air back at one another with the rad in the crossfire.

  • 1 point

I figured that out a few days ago. I get such good temps I just disconnected the front fans and will reverse them when I clean the loop in a few months.

  • 1 point

Very Nice style, love it and the part choice!

  • 1 point

Also is that rigid tubing and if that is, what kind? PETG, acrylic, size?

  • 1 point

1/2 in OD acrylic. Its a pain in the *** to measure and make fit but it looks good, even for the amateur job I did with it.

  • 1 point

How'd you bend it?

  • 1 point

You put a silicon cord in the tube and heat the tube using a heat gun, I used a round object to make the 90 degree bends uniform. Theres a couple of youtube videos on it.

just... wow m8

Maaaannnn this build BEGS to receive a kit of red or red/black sleeving.

Incredibly nice build; I love EK stuff and yearn for a fully Acetal/copper custom loop but there aren't any blocks for my card. I love what you've done with the paint scheme and window on the 760T!

Woah awesome build!

Spends $5500 on custom water cooling, custom paint and stickers, 2 titan blacks, a 6 core intel monster... then doesn't spend less than $50 on some nice cables...

  • 1 point

Forgot to put a blurb on there about that. I tried to sleeve with paracord, I gave up on it and I'm gonna get custom sleeved cables when I upgrade the power supply.

I loved this build until I saw the turtle beach headphones.

  • 1 point

Low end headphones/headsets don't bother me, it's the computer that I care about.

  • 1 point

I don't have "high end" headphones either it's just that I've had bad experiences with multiple turtle beaches and them breaking within a week of getting them.

  • 1 point

Did you have the dragon painted on or is it a sticker? If it is a sticker where can I buy one?

  • 1 point

Its a vinyl and it was custom from performancepcs

  • 1 point

Curious.

I am planning a build with the same motherboard and case, did the E-ATX size interfere with cable management in any way? I had read a review or two that said the motherboard got in the way of the grommets.

Besides that, +1!

  • 1 point

The cable management was great in that case. I didn't have any issues with any cables with the exception of the front fans but I was trying to connect them to the other side of the case almost.

For a 6K rig you should totally have sleeved cables.

  • 1 point

Do you have any pics of your full setup after you have finished

Once I get my third screen out of storage and get the sleeved cables I will post an update with the full setup.

"but I wasn’t going to go too crazy with costs" is what he says...4k later...Lol. Nice build, man. How's the monitor? I've been looking into getting a monitor that can make gaming, watching movies, and just plain surfing the interwebs seem more enjoyable.

  • 2 points

The monitor is awesome, extremely high detail obviously with the 4k. The font sizes are tiny though.

From FrozenCPU

  • 1 point

Could you lend some money? XD

  • 1 point

I wasn’t going to go too crazy with costs +1, love this build, but, like so many before me, why the Titan Black? Why not 3 980's or 780 ti's. Anyway, who cares. It looks amazing, and at the end of the day, whatever floats your boat.

  • 1 point

I do 3d editing and ultra high rez mods that requires a ton of VRAM. Once they come out with an 8GB 980, Ill upgrade to 3 980s.

  • 1 point

I was wondering about a new 980. Do you think that Nvidia will make a 8gb 980, or a 990. And really, for most people, an extra 4gb of Vram isn't really worth the extra money. What do you think they would do to improve the 980's chip? More CUDA cores? Higher clock speed? Warp 6 Hyperdrive?! Anyway, thanks for getting back to me so quickly, you sound like a great guy.

  • 1 point

Really nice build. If you're not happy with your lights, I suggest you look into the BitFenix Alchemy line. I just got some and they are very bright.

Ever heard of thermodynamics? No? Then stop pretending to understand.

You find it funny that he spent over 2K on GPUs that will be highly beneficial to his rendering activities? Intriguing. I also find your display of utterly unabashed ignorance highly amusing. Not everyone is a budget builder.

dude if you read his reasoning i would say his choice is slightly justified(altough the r9 295x2 would beat it in gaming and do well in rendering with 8gb vram)
