Description

It's a gaming focused rig that was affordable in the mid range for my friend. He ordered all the parts on cyber monday, so he did save an ok amount of money.
He did decide to spend $20 more for 16 gigs of ram rather than 8, which isn't all that bad but I doubt he'd use it all. My friend also used his old power supply in this build. Wish it wasn't all ketchup and mustard cables though.

AMD - FX-6300 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor

Standard AMD processor that should get the job done for him.

CPU Cooler

Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

Another standard unit. Can do some light overclocking with the processor to squeeze out some more performance.

Motherboard

Gigabyte - GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard

Motherboard has enough features for what he's using it for so it's fine.

Memory

Kingston - HyperX Fury Black 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-1866 Memory

This specific RAM is cool as hell, so why not? It costed only a $20 different in 8GB and 16 so it's not all that bad... Even if more than half of it won't be used most of the time.

Storage

Kingston - SSDNow V300 Series 120 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Squeezed in an SSD when it was on sale.

Storage

Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Standard for mass storage.

Video Card

Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 970 4 GB G1 Gaming Video Card

Pretty nice overclockable GPU.

Case

Phanteks - Enthoo Pro ATX Full Tower Case

This case was just his personal preference in what he liked. This case has a ton of room for expansion and has plenty of features.

I believe that FX-6300 might bottleneck the gtx 970. I had experience with an FX-6300 but I had 750ti which was't bottlenecked. I just heard it might bottleneck thats all.

more like will. FX-6300 can't keep up with 970s. maybe upgrade to an i5 or i3? better single-core = less bottleneck

Don't be like me and pick whatever is cheapest with more cores!... I sadly did that for my first build, but it rocks everything I need it to. FX-8150 @ 4.1 Air, R9 390 4GB.

Some roles a computer can be used in do better with more cores, the FX line does have its place just not in gaming normally. If you are running a lot of VM's a FX will crush most of the Intel chips under 1k. Also price per performance AMD is normally better, Intel does not really catch up until the i5 4690k in price per performance and that is only due to a recent price drop. You cannot really pair the 6300 against the 4690k since it is $100 cheaper, it really pars off against the i3 and G3258 which the 6300 crushes in performance over all.

I have both a i5-4690k and a FX8320 build. If all I'm doing is gaming the i5 crushes the FX8320, if I am streaming the FX8320 does much better then the i5. When doing intense multi tasking you can see the i5 choke where the FX8320 does fine, steaming is very CPU intensive. I also have a build with a FX6300, it does not do as good as the 8320 but still does better then the i5 in heavy multi core loads.

This generation of amd chips have poor single thread performance, which is the reason behind the bottle neck in games. So, at least until Zen, Intel has superior gaming performance.

You think some overclock will limit the bottleneck? Or if the GPU is also overclocked will it widen the gap?

He has a nice gpu, not an awful situation. better to spend 80 now and 200 later on a cpu then 200 now and 300 later on a gpu IMO

Overclock does increase single thread performance. Honestly, with an overclock on that cpu, you should be fine. I don't know a whole lot about overclocking gpu's, but I don't think it will make much of a difference.

You should be able to overclock the FX6300 to compensate for most bottlenecking issues. This chip is ridiculously overclockable.

what power supply is used here? given that you have to use a molex to pci-e adapter for a single gpu setup and looking at the sleeving. it's something cheap and low capacity.

can see in his picture he's using a molex to 6pin adapter. some "thermaltake" without as much as two pci-e connectors and is supposed to be a 650 watt....doesn't bode well.

He got it from an old dell prebuild, so I guess they didn't include it inside because it wasn't need for the build.

It needs to be replaced ASAP. A low quality PSU is the most dangerous thing you can do to a PC.

He stands firm on not replacing it. I've told him a couple of times if he was sure or not. I'll try to get him to buy a new one though.

I don't recall dell ever using thermaltake. hopefully you've got like a 330-350 watt delta OEM psu that won't blow up, but even still, it needs to be replaced for something new and with at least 450 watts on a single +12v. 90% of the consideration for a pc should be given to the power supply and motherboard, the rest is falling in the 10% margin of importance. seriously, only noobs, innocently unaware or willingly ignorant people think otherwise. you don't wanna see his new pc become a disaster.

Maybe get some sleeved PSU cable extensions. The silverstone tek ones are really nice and pretty inexpensive.

Go for 50$ case , instead of 99 and buy a better mobo. Then oc the fx 6300 and there u go, cpu wont bottleneck the 970 at all.

Yea, I kinda wanted him to get the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M when it was on sale in order to get the MSI 970 board. But then again maybe if he got a cheaper case he could've gotten a better CPU looking at what people have said so far.

Why are you using molex adapters for the GPU? If your PSU does not have the needed cables, it is not a good PSU and needs to be replaced.

No, I don't think you understand. The PSU is the single most important component of the PC. If it is low quality that is really bad. Any PSU that does not have the proper connectors for the GPU is completely the wrong PSU to be powering that PC. You are likely pushing that low quality PSU way too hard and might may the price. I'd strongly recommend replacing it before bad things happen.
