Description

My old i5 3570k with Saphire HD 7970 crapped out on me after 6 faithful years. Only thing I had to do with that thing was a PSU after 5 years. So I had to put something together quick. I chose to go with the i7 vs the i5 because it was only a $100 difference, and that seemed worth it to me.

Picking the RX 580 at this time was not ideal, being as the prices are inflated and the ones I wanted were not available (Red Devil or Nitro+). Also that is going to be the bottleneck for this PC currently. I almost went with a 1070 ti, but I already have a Freesync monitor. So I purchased the Red Dragon RX 580, and when a Vega actually becomes available it will be replaced with one of those. The Red Dragon looks good, and has a nice back plate.

I went with the Asus Rog Strix MB as a recommendation and it looks great! It's very easy to work on, and even has a heat sink for the M.2 slot. RAM was a great price for 3200mhz and had the color that I was looking for. H80i CPU cooler was also a recommendation from someone who has used them a lot. I haven't had any experience with water cooling so that was reassuring. Installation of the H80i in this case was a pain, did not fit very well and had to make multiple adjustments. We originally installed it up high at first, then realized that it would have to be installed after the MB and GPU. We also found out that it would need to go a bit lower which worked out with the front fan fully encompassing the rad.

Once everything was installed I used the overclocking tool that comes with the Asus MB. It reached a 5.2Ghz OC. I haven't overclocked the GPU yet, but I will update this once I do. Here is a link for the 3dmark benchmark using the free demo. https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/24262249?

Enjoying the look of this build. It is much smaller and quieter than my old antec 300 tower.

Thanks for checking out my build!

+1 ALREADY FOR THAT CABLE MANAGEMENT, the Core V1, I must admit, is a ***** to cable manage with, but gratz on getting it clean looking. I must admit, I love the hell out of these SFF powerful builds, and having that 8700k overclocked to 5.2GHz is ******* mental, how does your CPU even manage 53 degrees under load with a H80i? My hat is ******* tipped to you, man. Have fun with that beast of a PC.

Thanks! It was a pain in the *** for cable management. I didn't realize how small that thing was when I chose it!! To be fair, I did rerun the overclock tool and lowered it to 4.8. It did run at the 5.2 with no problems, I just don't need to push it that far for what I use it for.
